THE UNEMPLOYED.

The following letter has been forwarded by his Worship the Mayor of Christchurch, to the several Boroughs and Road Boards in the vicinity of Christchurch : Sir, —In compliance with a resolution passed unanimously by the City Council last evening, I hive the honor to address yon on the subject of finding employment for the large number of men with families out of work. The Government have been written to on the subject, and they have agreed to commence a section of the railway at the Waipara to give employment. The City Council, Drainage Bohrd, and Lyttelton Harbor Board have also directed works to be put in hand for a like purpose. The influx of men from all quarters has made it impossible for the City Council to give work to more of the unemployed than they have taken on (52 men), and as the Government are of opinion that it is the duty of the local bodies to provide for emergencies of this nature, it has occurred to the Christchurch City Council to apply to the neighboring Boroughs and Road Boards to ask their co-operation. _ As the Road Boards have considerable funds at their disposal, it is to bo hoped that they will at once put works in hand to give the employment so urgently needed. I would, therefore, respectfully urge upon you the necessity for putting such works in baud as will tend to lessen the present pressure, and enable the men to get employment, and so tida over the present depression. I have the honor to he, sir, Yonr obedient servant, C. T. Ick, Mayor.
