COUNCILLOR CASS AND MR TRIBE.
To the Editor of the Globe.
Sib, —In common with many residents of Christchurch, I am sorry to observe by yesterday’s papers that Councillor Cass has tabled a motion in the City Council to superannuate Mr Tribe from his post of collector. Those inhabitants of Christchurch of many years standing, who have known Mr T. long before <he advent of Councillor Cass in Christchurch, can bear witness lo the way in which tho former has discharged the unpleasant duties inseparable from a collector’s billet, and I feel sure will agree with me that, seeing there is an assistant collector of rates, that the notice of motion is both unwise and uncalled for. For a great number of years Mr T. discharged his duties at a very inadequate salary, and, now that (he post is better paid, it seems that Councilor Cass and those in tho Council who agree with him, wish to quietly shelve a good public servant, in connection with whom the word infirmity .e a gratuitous insult. I trust, Sir, at the next meeting of the City Council that the motion in question will meet the fate it deserves, and either be seconded pro forma or meet with a crushing defeat. I would suggest to the friends of Mr Tribe that a monster petition should bo got up during the present week against the proposed action, feeling sure it would be largely signed. Yours, &c, FAIR PLAY. Christchurch, June sth, 1879.
