Tho sailors used tho Gatlin guns, and made fearful havoc among the compact masses of Zulus, Five thousand were slain, and tho siege was raised without further conflict. Col. Wood has achieved a brilliant victory. Tho Zulus turned 4000 cattle on the sides of tho mountains, behind which 35,000 warriors were secreted. A detachment of dragoons started after tho cattle, and was just returning safely when the enemy attacked them, slaughtered all tho English excepting one man, who alarmed the camp. Hasty defences were erected, when the storm burst, the whole of tho Zulu army attacking en masse. The Gatlin gun shells swept off whole divisions Tho execution made by the rifles was terrible. Notwithstanding fearful attacks by tho Zulus all failed, and 4000 were killed and wounded. BERLIN, May 11. The Tariff Bills of Prince Bismarck have been referred to a select committee 9 which has considered their favorable adoption.
