BoAED OP CONSEEVATOIta —Tho usual monthly meeting of tho Whinmkariri Conservancy Board was to have been held at noon, at the new olUcos of the Board, Messrs Harman an<i Stevens’ buildings, Hereford quorum, those present being Messrs R. J, S. Harman (chairman) and J. N. Tosswill. Committee Meetings. —Meetings were held this morning of the f inance and Public Works Committees. Nothing but the ordinary routine business came before either of those bodies, who will report to tho City Council at its meeting this evening. City Solicitohship.—Two applications have been received for the post of City Solicitor, so that, contrary to anticipation, the election will net be a species of walk-over. The applications will be considered at the meeting of the Council this evening.

N. Z. Annuities and Life iNstraANCE Department.—As will be seen by advertisement in another column, Mr W. J. Rudd, late of Westland, has been Appointed travelling agent for this department. Kowai Cemeteky. —Tho Cemetery Board accepted tho tender of Mr Webster, 0.E., to lay off the ground granted to this district for a cemetery. Mr Webster went to Kowai this morning to commence the work, which is one of considerable magnitude, and will probably occupy Mr Webster and his party some days. Spoetino. — A trotting match has been arranged for £2OO aside, money down, between Mr Frank W. Evans’ grey mare Millie, from Rangilikci, and Mr Thomas Milner’s celebrated Black Boy ; distance, fifteen miles on the Riccarton road; to be run on the 17th. There it great excitement in sporting circles about, the event, and a great deal of money has already been put on it. Tho local horse has many backers, and the fact that Rangitikei is a breeding dist rict induces people to support the unknown Millie.

Commouokk Ricuaeds. Oommodora Frederick William Richards, who is spoken of in the “ Home News” as having been ordered to the Cape for service in the Zulu War, is brother of Mr E. Y. Richards, of the Public Works Department, Road Cbossings,—ln a great number of instances throughout the city and its suburbs the carriage crossings on the footpaths are in a very indifferent state of repair, being quite broken or cut up, and decidedly sloppy. Notices have been sent to the owners of property whose duty it is to have these passages kept in repair, but those notices have been altogether disregarded, and the objectionable state of things continues, to the no small inconvenience and annoyance of foot passengers. Now that the winter is coming on, and rain will bo plentiful, it is highly necessary that these matters should receive attention.

Spouting.—Two important notices of motion wore given at the half-yearly meeting of the Jockey Club, on Saturday, which will bo considered at the adjourned meeting. These refer to (lie maximum weight in handicaps, and to the fresh drawing for places in running off dead heats. In (he first it is proposed that the maximum weight in handicaps for the future shall be 9.tt. s!be.

Geain at Stations. —The number of bags of grain at the various stations on Friday evening was 5288 bags. Among the parcels were tho following: —Amberley, 80 hags, Ohertscy, 45, Oust, 60, Dunsandel, 45, Kaiapoi, 400, Lccston, 200, Makikihi, 357, Olaio, 800, Oxford East, 110, Pleasant Point, 43, Kakaia, 5(17, Rmgitata South, IGO, St. Andrew, 32G, Temukn, 200, Waimate, 900, Waimate Junction, 100, Waitaki North, 440, Winchester, 350.

Ooueection —Mr Sainsbury wishes it slated that the cases of acid which caught fire on Saturday morning at his promises were not stored against Mr Beardsley’s house, but against tho paling some distance from it.

Snow.--- On Fl'idaj the Malvern Hills were quite white, and snow fell for some time all over Hassell's Flat, but it melted immediatelv.

A Stranded Whale. — A whale twentytwo feet long was washed ashore on Kaiapoi Beach on Friday, having apparently been shot at sea. Tiio circaso was claimed by J. Petersen. ,

Masonic Funeral — l The funeral of Mr J. H. Aldridge, who was lately tyler of the Southern Cross lodge of Freemasons, took place at Kaiapoi on Sunday, and was largely attended by members of the craft and others.

Address to Constituents.— lt is stated that Mr C. C. Bowen, member for the Kaiapoi district, will shortly address the electors at the principal centres of the district. Sydenham Borough Council. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Sydenham Council will be held this evening. City Council. —The usual weekly meeting will be held this evening. At this meeting the pplicat'ona for the City Solicitorship will be onsidered.

LaehiktniSM— Complaints liave_ recently been received by the police of larrikinism in different parts of the town On Saturday night the attention of Constable O’Connor was directed to a number of pipes which had been taken from the drainage works on Ferry road and thrown across the street. Ho also went to Woolston on receipt of information as to depredations committed in that locality, and found that several gates had been wrenched off their hinges, and a good deal of wanton mischief done by a set of larrikins. Some of the offenders are known, and steps have been taken to bring them to justice.

Temblahy.— The Hope of Amberley Lodge celebrated its first anniversary by a tea meeting and entertainment in the Town Hall. A number of the brethren and sisters from Rangiora were in attendance, and rendered valuable service, notably, Mrs Watson, Mr R. Foster, Mr Hammond, Mrs Holder, and Miss Wooler, also lent their services. Mr Spurr’s boys enacted an amusing little farce, entitled “ A Run on the Amberley Bank,” which was well received, and altogether the entertainment (though not'so well attended as could be desired, on account of the unfavourable state of the weather) was very fairly successful. ASHBURTON FOOTBALL ClulL— This club held a meeting on Saturday night. Mr H. T. Winter was elected president, Mr Thomas BuUock, • rant> cap t a in • Mr F. ttin waring, secretary, and R. M. Buchanan, treasurer. It was determined that play should commence speedily. Many members have joined, and the club anticipate a good season. Grand Orange Lodge, Middle Island. —As the half-yearly meeting of the Grand Lodge commences on Wednesday next, in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Timaru, the representatives of the several lodges around Christchurch, accompanied by the R.W.G.M., Bro. Rovell, will proceed to that place by the morning express, and will be met at Ashburton by the contingents from Rakaia, Ellesmere, Prebbleton, Templeton, Malvern, Courtenay, and Ashburton. The representatives from Dunedin, Invercargill, and Southern lodges will leave Dunedin by the 7 35 express lor Timaru. The Westland representatives will also be in attendance. A good muster is anticipated, as much business of importance is to bo brought forward., " ; ;.
