SOUTHLAND COURSING CLUB MEETING.

[Press Special Wire.] INVERCARGILL, May 8. The second day’s sport of the Southland Club ■was marred by the weather, the afternoon coming in wet and tho hares lying very close in consequence. About fifty persons assembled at the meet at Morton Mains, and drawing for courses of the St. Leger at once commenced, and resnlied as follows : Mr McDonald’s Hawthorn agst Mr May’s Te Kooti Mr Tipper’s Maritana agst Mr McDonald s Luffra Mr Hay’s Koromika agst Mr Sutton’s Rattler Mr Powell’s Nora agst Mr Howard’s Harmony Mr Sutton’s Referee to run a bye. The beaters then went to work. Hawthorn and Te Kooti were soon slipped to a strong hare. Te Kooti led from the start and won, but tho hare escaped. Maritana and Luffra were next slipped, tho former taking the lead, and was adjudged the winner; the hare however was far too good for her and escaped, Koromika and Rattler next coursed a hare, but she got away without much trouble, and a no course was declared. Another strong hare then got up, and Nora and Harmony were slipped to a splendid course. Both dogs worked well, turning the hare in turn, Harmony making the final chop, and killed, winning the course. Referee then ran a bye and killed. The no course of Rattler and Koromika was then ran off. The dogs pushed the hare closely, did capital work all through, and killed, both being close up at the finish. Rattler winning. Tho ties for All-aged Stakes were then drawn as follows Mr Tapper’s Brigadier against Mr Wade s Lily. Mr Kingsland’s Kip against Mr McDonald’s Briton. Mr Sutton’s Gazelle against Mr McDonald s Bruce. Mr Howard’s Austrian Briar against Mr Surman’s Gyp. Brigadier and Lily were first slipped to a fine hare, and tho finest course ever ran in this district ensued. It extended two miles. Brigadier eventually killed and won. Kip and Briton next ran, Kip leading, taking the first wrench, and Briton the next turn. Kip won the course, but there was no kill. The next course lay between Gyp and Austrian Briar, Gyp running in and killing at once. Ties were again drawn as follows ; St. Lbgbb.—Maritana against Te Kooti, Referee against Harmony, Rattler a bye. All-Aged Stakes. —Brigadier against Gazelle, Kip against Gyp. The result was— Te Kooti beat Maritana, no kill; Referee beat Harmony, no kill; Rattler ran a bye with Nora, the latter killing. Heavy rain then set in, and although the beaters stuck to their work no more hares were started. Tho remaining courses will be run off to-morrow at Plemington.
