FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

[Press Special Wire.] Dunedin, May 6,

As the 5.40 p.xn. train to Anderson’s Bay was crossing the intersection of Jetty street, it knocked down a man and killed him. The body was dragged about two engines length, and was found lying between the rails, with one leg oyer them. Mr Henry Guthrie, who was walking with deceased, gaye the name of the latter as Cunningham, of Kakanui. Mr Guthrie states that the whistle was well sounded as the train approached, and this is corroborated by two witnesses. The body was removed to the hospital, where an inquest will he held. Deceased is stated to have been master of the steamer Ino. Until recently, when the line was straightened, gates used to be placed at this crossing, and now a watchman remains there until dusk, when dray traffic ceases. This watchman had left his post but shortly before the accident. The body was much mangled.
