MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

LYTTELTON. Wednesday, May 7. [Before His Worship the Mayor.] Determined to be Arrested. — John Kelly, lately from Hokitika was presented for having struck an inoffensive fellowcitizen twice with a clenched fist, and in presence of a police officer. The constable said the accused came to him, and stated that he wished to be taken in custody for protection. Directly after this he struck a man that was passing along the street. The constable then arrested him. Accused said he was not well at the time, having been drinking. Mr Phillips, the chief gaoler, said he believed the man simply committed the offence so that he could get into prison to communicate with one of the long sentence prisoners. It was not an uncommon thing for men to do this. The Bench discharged the accused, with the caution that should he come up again the sentence would be the heaviest the Court could inflict. Helplessly Drunk. A first offence prisoner was fined ss, with the usual alternative.
