[PEE PEESS AGENCY.] Wellington, April 25. The list of nominated immigrants to be forwarded home by the outgoing mail will contain upwards of 200 nominations. The “New Zealander” says that Mr Shaw, who has been appointed district Judge, will not enter upon his new duties until the end of May next. While discussing the question of charitable aid in the City Council, several members dwelt strongly upon the necessity for a home for old people being provided. Some Italian fishermen had a drunken row. One had his nose bitten off, and another had his stomach cut open with a razor, two terrific gashes being given across the abdomen. With tne exception of the wounded man the offenders have not yet been apprehended, A New Loan. One of the first proposals that Government will make to Parliament next session will be to raise a four million loan. They have received a cable message from London, advising them that recent New Zealand five per cents stand higher in the market than they ever stood before, and that New Zealand securities generally are very firm. The Native Crisis. It is authoritatively stated that the survey and road parties on the Mountain road, Taranaki, have not been stopped by Natives, and that the reports to that effect are without foundation. An officer of Government visited the camp yesterday, and found them undisturbed. The Commission on Higher EducationThe Royal Commission appointed to enquire into and report upon the conditions of higher education in the colony, find that it will be impossible to conclude their labors before July, and they have obtained an extension of time. A substantial interim report will, however, be prepared in time for presentation to Parliament next session. The Commissioners will continue their sittings in Wellington for some time, and at the beginning of June will visit Otago. Wanganui, April 25. By a fall of earth at the works in the Waitotara railway contract yesterday, two men were severely injured. One died almost immediately; the other was brought to town for medical assistance. The deceased, George Jackson, is aged sixty-five, and has recently come from Hokitika. [from oitb own correspondent.] Dunedin, April 25. An Exciteable Military Man. Captain Hammersley of the Timarn Artillery has been summoned to appear at the City Police Court on Thursday for riot in the arcade.
