C.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. Stewards —Messrs. J. Studholme, H. Prins, L. Walker, E. L. Clogstoun, P. W. Delamain, J. Brabazon, Sir J. C. Wilson, C. 8., K.S.I. Judge—Mr M. Studholme. Handicapper— Mr H. P. Lance. Starter —Mr J. Campbell. Clerk of the Course—Mr E. W. Millett. Clerk of the Scales —Mr S. Garforth. Hon Treasurer —Mr G. G. Stead. Fiest Day—Monday, April 14. After a long spell of dry weather the rain selected the first day of the Autumn Meeting for a regular soaker, spoiling the attendance, which however was very good, considering the fact that the weather was threatening from an early hour. Had it not been for the inopportune rain the Autumn Meeting of 1879 would have been as well if not better attended than its predecessors. The various games now so familiar to frequenters of racecourses were in full form, although the rain interfered to some extent with the success of some of the gentlemen who generously afford the public a chance of making a pound or two. A gentleman rejoicing in the title of the New Zealand Blondin, had a wire stretched from the new stand to a support opposite, upon which he proposed to exhibit his powers. Mr Millett was to the fore as usual as Clerk of the Course, though the beauties of his pink had to suffer a temporary eclipse owing to the weather. Mr J. Campbell acted as starter, and Mr S. Gar forth discharged the unobtrusive but still most important duties of Clerk of the Scales with his usual correctness and ability. The urbane and courteous Secretary of the C.J.C. was übiquitous during the day, and no one was in more request or attended more faithfully to his multifarious duties than he did.

For the Free Handicap which opened the ball seven wore colored on the card, but Mr Yallance’s Yampire was an early absentee being scratched. This was followed soon after by the defection of Laertes, leaving only five.

In this order they ran to the turn into the straight, when Naiad, despite the efforts of her boy to keep her straight, ran off the course, and was out of the race. Coming down the straight Randwick made an effort to come up with Nemo, who was leading, but he foil back. Maritana was running second, and in this order they passed the post, the representative of the black and gold winning a good race by a length, Maritana second, and Numa third, Randwick finishing a fair fourth, Naiad not being persevered with. At Redwood’s, Camballo, Longlands, and Mata wore all in it, with Templeton, Titania, Chancellor, and Vampire forming the next division. Coming round to turn, Mata and Longlands shot out from the rest and into the straight. They came away together with the rest in a cluster.
