The brigantine Anthons, from Melbourne, has been chartered for two years to carry coal from Greymouth to Wellii gtou and other ports of Now Zealand. On Saturday afternoon four gun detachments proceeded to the range with four Armstrongs for a friendly match. The target was erected at a distance of 1500 yards in the estuary. The competitors were—No. 1, G Battery, Invercargill; Nos. 2 and 3, B Battery, Dunedin ; No. 4, E battery, Christchurch. No. 1 gun made 80 points ; No 2, 71; No. 3,_ 67 ; No, 4, 51. Thus Invercargill proved victorious. They, of course, had the advantage of firing on their own ground. At the same time a friendly match was fired between the Dunedin Naval Brigade and the Portobello rifles, the men firing alternately with carbines and rifles. The rifles were victorious by 15 points- In the evening Capt. Hoywood was the recipient of a testimonial from the Arrow Rifles, in acknowledgment of his services in forming that company. On Sunday fully a thousand men mustered. Today the weather is again lovely. Battalions Nos. 2 and 3, numbering about 600 men, paraded at 8,15, and proceeded to the review ground at Grove’s Bush, where they took the_ position of the attacking force. No. 1 battalion, the defending f-.rce, loft for Makerewa two hours’ later. The or inance left for the ground at three this morning by road. The review ground is situated eight miles from the town. Christchurch will be the scene of the next review on November fith.
