[Press Special Wire.] Auckland, April 8. There is no sign of the mail steamer yet. The residents at Helensvillo are raising funds to enable the widow of the stoker, killed by the sudden collapse of the rotten frame of the tanks, to sue the Government for damages. The rates collected by the City Council for the year ended March 31 st was .£7200 12s sd. Wellington, April 8. Special arrangements in the railway service will be made for the coming holidays. Ihe diver of the Emerald, who went down to day to examine the degree of injury done to the hulk Eli Whitney by the numerous attempts made to blow her up, found that only the deck and a few of the ribs were removed. The main bulk of the hull remains practically untouched. With reference to the office of t'nder Secretary of Defence, which the “ Post ” referred to last night, it says to-night that the office was abolished only as a separate one, the appointment being held by Col. Moule jointly with that of Commissioner of A. C., the salary being £7OO. The present Government replaced Col. Moule by Col. Reader at a salary of £4OO a year, so that in this case there has been, practically, a departmental economy. As regards the new office of Assistant-Controller and Auditor, it is fair to mention that Mr Batkin, who received the appointment, succeeded Dr. Knight, who held the same office under a different title, and no increased charge to the public has been incusred. Win. Linklater, carpenter of 'the Lorraine, was fined £5 and costs for ill-using a lunatic who was placed in his care on the voyage. The Native Minister left for Waimate Plains and New Plymouth. The Librarian of the Athenamm reports that his desk was forced open, and £23 14s, which was in the cashbox, taken. A Law Students’ Society has been formed in Wellington, and the first meeting will be held this evening, when Mr W. L. Travers, president, will deliver an opening address. Another meeting of ratepayers will bo held to-morrow to discuss the proposed loan. Dunedin, April 8, At a meeting of the City Council to-day, it was resolved that all their advertisements, except statutory notices, should be published in all the daily papers of Dunedin, and the rate fixed was 2s an inch. Invercargill, April 8. The Kaitangata fund subscriptions amount to nearly £6OO. A meeting to finally dispose of them will be held next week.
