N , Blakiston occupied the chair. These, in addition to the numerous trophies won by the club at public regattas, were all arranged, and made a good display on a sideboard. After justice had been done to the good things provided, the chairman, after a few brief remarks, said he would pass on to principal feature of the evening's proceedings, the distribution of the prizes won during the season 1878 9.

After the distribution of the prizes a number of toasts were proposed and duly responded to. During the course of the evening, the captain took the opportunity of making a few observations on the racing during the past season. So far as the races on the river were concerned, he said each event had been fairly well contested, and there had been no lack of competitors. The club had also been successful in pulling off the race for doubJe sculls at the Lyttelton Regatta. At Kaiapoi, however, the club had been singularly unfortunate this season. This he attributed in a great measure to the practice of making most of the club races short distance races, and the fact of continuing them too late in the season, thereby not allowing 1 '. members sufficient time to train suffi ciently for the regattas. Next; season heh >ped to see fewer races and longer distances, with sufficient interval between each event to allow the competitors to go in for a proper course of training. At the regattas, he said, where the races were usually over two milea, or two and a half mile courses, the club's boats generally led at the start, but through Insufficient training were often unable to reserve enough strength for a good and successful spurt at the finish of a loi.g race. By having fewer races and longer courses generally, he thought it would give the members more chance at a public regatta, and next season he hoped the committee would see fit to act on his suggestion.

A number of songs were sung by different members during the evening, and the proceedings closod with a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman.
