In the Budget it is proposed that the cigar duty shall bo increased 2:1, and that the currency of Exchequer bonds shall be extended for a year. Sir S. In the House of Commons to-day, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in replying to a question, said that it was not yet intended to establish a British settlement in New Guinea, but that Sir A. Gordon, in returning to Fiji, wouid, however, report on the steps advisable to be taken. THE WEST AUSTRALIAN XOAN. The minimum of the Western Australian loan is fixed at 06. THE ENGLISH BUDGET. The Chancellor of the Exchequer made his budget statement to-day. The revenue of the past financial year is £83,125,000. The expenditure for the same perion is £85,375,003, including the expenses of the Zulu war. The estimated revenue for the present financial year is £83,030,000. The estimated expenditure is £81,125,000. The Chancellor of ths Exchequer hoped that the surplus would suffice for the Zulu war, and would enable the redemption of £600,000 of Treasury bonds. The balance, £1,750,000 of Treasury bonds, to be prolonged for twelve months. The budget proposes an increase of twopence duty on cigars.
