CRICKET.

TIMARU PRESS CLUB v. CHRISTCHURCH " PRESS." A very pleasant game of cricket was played at Ashburton'on Saturday last between elevens selected from the two offices. The match took place map iddock lent for the occasion. Owing to want of practice on the part of both teams, the fielding was at fault, but there was a very creditable display of batting on the part of Mr Collins (captain of the ! imaru team), who managed to place together the respectable score of 57. This might have been prevented if the fielding of the PRESS team had been a little better. The bowling of Mr W. H. Smith, junr , for the Press was very effective. He took no less than five wi kets, bowling three and catching two men off his own bowling The match resulted in the Tiwaru team being victorious by three wickets and twenty-seven runs to spare. After the match was over, the two teams met together at a capital luncheon, provided by Mr Quill, which was thoroughly enjoyed. The usual complimentary toasts having been duly proposed and responded to, the Christchurch team saw their viitors off by the tram, and three cheers were given by the Timaru men to their opponents, vrhich *ere as heartily responded to on their leaving by the Christchurch men It is intended tut-t the match shall be an annual affair.
