MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Maech 31. [Before Or. L. Lee, Esq., J.P., and Dr. Deamer, J.P ~| Dbunk and Disobdeely.—One inebriate was fined 10s. Wife Dusebtion. —Wm. Patrick Foley, on remand from Invercargill, was charged with deserting his wife and five children, and the case was adjourned until Wednesday, April 2nd, to be heard before Mr Mellish. Not Undee Coneol.—Charles Fraser was fined 10s and 2s costs for not having his horse under proper control. Wandebing Hobses and Cattle.—The following fines were inflicted for allowing horses and cattle to wander at large or to obstruct the public thoroughsares : —Thomas Haskett, 5s and costs 7s ; h\ Malcolm, 10a and costs 7s; T. Green, 10s and costs 7s ; W. R. Smith, 5s and costs 7s ; J. Lummis, 5s and costs 7s; P. Brice, 10s and costs 7s; P. Howard, 5s and 7s; W. P. Townend, 5s and 7s ; J. Forrester, 5s and costs 7s; F. B. Ballard and F. McDowell, 10s and costs 7s ; Hamilton Bright, 10s and costs 7s ; Arthur Go rard, 10s and costs 2s; Peter Paasche, 20a and costs 2a; and J. B. Nesbitt, 5a and costs 2s. Cbuelty to Animals. —Joseph James, in tho employ of Mr H. J. Milsom, was summoned for driving a horse in a spring cart while suffering from a sore shoulder. The offence, which was committed in opposition to Mr Milsom's orders, was proved, and a fine of 20s inflicted. Unekgistebed Dogs.—Wm. Shaw and John Abraham were each fined 20s, and 2a costs, for having an unregistered dog in their possession. Beeah of Public-house Obdinance.—« James E. Bashford waß summoned for neglecting to keep the lamp in front of his hotel alight. Constable Norgate stated the offence took place on the night of the 16th inst. A fine of 10s was inflicted.

Railway By-Laws. Mary Ryan was charged with trespassing on the railway line. She admitted walking along the line for the purpose of making a short cut, but said she was not aware she was doing any wrong. She was fined ss, and costs 2s. Assaults.—John Yates was summoned for assaulting Martha Yates. Mr Gresson appeared for the complainant and Mr Joyce for the defendant. The complainant gave evidence of habitual ill-usage at the hands of the defendant, and prayed that he might be bound over to keep the peace and that a protection order might be granted her. The defendant was heard on his own behalf, and called five witnesses to prove that the complainant ill-used her children, and was in the habit of abusing him. Evidence was also given that the complainant had been supplied with everything she required by the defendant. Both counsel having addressed the Bench, the latter decided to dismiss the information, as there was no proof that the complainant had not been allowed a proper maintenance, or that any assault had been committed upon her. John Bale was charged with having committed an assault on John Flashburne on the 25th inst. Mr Izard appeared for the complainant, and Mr O'Reilly for the defendant. The complainant stated the particulars of the alleged assault, which rose out of a cattle trespass, and called a witness in substantiation of it. The defendant's version having been heard, in which he admitted having assaulted the complainant, the Bench fined the defendant 40s, and cost! 14s, and counsel's fee £l. Is. Abusive Language.—John Beaton, who had been remanded from Saturday, again appeared to answer the charge of using abusive and threatening language to his cousin, Marion Beaton. The case was dismissed on the defendant promising not to molest the complainant for the future.

LYTTELTON. Monday, Maech 31. TBefore H. Allwright, Esq., and Dr. Bouse, J.P.'s.] A Desbeteb.—A seaman named John G-ilbert, belonging to the ship Marlborough, was charged with deserting from the vessel in December, soon after the ship's arrival here. He had been granted two hours' leave and had taken over three months. The Bench sent him to gaol for one month with hard labor, and to be put on board the ship when she leaves.
