[from our own correspondents.] Oamaru, March z 7. A fatal accident occurred this morning to a man named George O’Brien, working at an excavation at Maheno. A mass of earth fell on O’Brien. When extricated it was found that he was seriously injured He was brought in by the train to the hospital, where be died shortly alter admission. Ashburton, March 27. Gbahamstown, March 27. Rich gold was got in the old Loyalty claim, Karaka, this morning, by Brace Bios., one of whom recently took ten tons of silver ore from Tar.aiua to Sydney to be tested. Part being sent to England, Bruce, while awaiting the result, joined his brother a few weeks ago in the Loyalty, and the discovery is the result of the work done since. This claim has been several times abandoned. The Thames Gold Mining Company once gave £ 1000 for it. Some splendid parcels of gold from creek washing at the Waitekanri were lodged in the bank to day. Dunedin. March 27. At a meeting at the Harbor Board to-day. Captain Fairchild, of the Hinemou, reported i that that vessel touched on the bar at the h ads I on March sth, when drawing only 12ft. tin. The Board attributed the touching to faulty steering, and suggested to Captain Fairchild to avail himself of the services of a pilot on future occasions. Greymouth, March 27. Mr Walter Miller, teller of the Bank of New Son'll Wales, commitsd suicide this afternoon by bl -wing out his brains. The deceased hud been in low spir.ts for some time past, Wellington, March 27. A child died here from nicotine poi oning, through putting the stump of an o.d cigar in its month. It is rumoured that the lowest tender for the new railway wharf is that of P. Coffey, of Wellington, the amount being between .£i7,000 and £ 18,000.
