RIFLE ASSOCIATION PRIZE FIRING.

t The meeting of the Rifle Association was continued yesterday, when the third match was fired, bringing the aggregate scoring to a close and showing Volunteer King, of Oamaru, to bo the winner with a total of 176 points. The prizes given by the Association varied in value from half a guinea to five guineas. The weather in the course of the day underwent a complete change, and from being warm and calm became cold, boisterous, and wet, the wind at times blowing almost a hurricane. The second interprovincial match was commenced at noon, just before which time the wind chopped round to the south-west and commenced to blow with great violence, so much so that it was hard work to get on the target at all. The shooting at the 200 yards range was fairly good under these circumstances. During the progress of the firing at this range the refreshment tent was blown down, scattering the various articles of crockery, glasses, &c., in all directions. Before the firing at the second range a very heavy rain set in from the south-west, and those competitors who were unfortunate enough to have to lead had to do so when they were hardly able to see the targets through the driving rain. After completing this range all the competitors met to consider the question of postponing the completion of the match, but after some discussion it was decided to go on in spite of the unfortunate weather.

From an examination of the scores it will be seen that the shooting was very irregular, and indeed it was by sheer good luck that anyone made agood score. Sometimes adifferencoof as miuhas fifteen points would be made between two competitors firing together at one target. The match cannot bo said to he any criterion of the shooting qualities of the respective teams. The totals of the scores under the circumstances of yesterday’s bad weather are very good. In the interprovincial match Captain Warner was appointed to command the Canterbury team, and Captain Wilson the Otago men. Color-Sergt. Armstrong, of the City Guards, acted as umpire, and in reference to tho mark ng it may bo stated that it was not nearly so good as it ought to have been. The following is a complete return of the shooting together with the highest aggregate scorers. The twelve highest of these are prize takers: VIRST MATCH.

THE DINNER. In the evening the members of the visiting team were entertained at a dinner at the Commercial Hotel, served up in Mr Cookson’s best style. The chair was occupied by Captain Warner, supported on his right and left by Captain Wilson (Dunedin), lieutenant Strange and Sergeant King (0 .mam), and the vice-chair by Lieutenant Appleby, supported on his right and left by Lieutenant Miller and Volunteer Christie. After the usual loyal and patriotic toasts had been duly honored. The chairman proposed the toast of the evening, “ The Visiting Team,” and expressed the great pleasure which he and his brother volunteers had experienced in meeting them in Canterbury. He paid them a hearty compliment for the victory they had achieved in the interprovincial match, but hoped the Canterbury men would be more fortunate at their next meeting. He also hoped that the defeat they had sustained would have the effect of stirring up the ambition of the men to become better shots, so that they might in future meet on more qual terms. With the toast he coupled the name of Captain Wilson. Captain Wilson replied, and at the close of his remarks, which were expressive o f the great pleasure that he and his brother volunteers from Otago had in meeting the Canterbury men, proposed the toast of the “ Canterbury Rifle Association,” coupled with the names of Captain Warner and Lieut. Appleby. Both gentlemen responded. The Chairman proposed the health of “ Capt. Hawkes, commandant of the district.” Captain Hawkes ui.de a suitable acknowledgment. Several other toasts were proposed and responded to, and the intervals were agreeably filled up with vocal and in truniental music, some capital songs being well sung by both local and visiting volunteers to a pianoforte accompaniment. A very pleasant gathering was brought to a close at eleven o'clock by the united company singing “ Auld Lang Syne.”
