[per press agency.] Wellington, March 18. Mr Jackson’s ;Case. Mr Jackson’s reply to the charge brought against him by the Surveyor-General is printed, and is very voluminous and ably drawn up. Mr Surveyor Jackson having refused to resign in those words, "poor and friendless as I may be, my self-respect forbids me to pocket a money consideration accompanied by a cruel indignity,” he was this morning informed that his Excellency the administrator had dismised him from the Public Service.
Coastal DefencesThe big guns for defence purposes have been landed from the Lorraine. They are of two sizes, namely, seven tons and three tons, and are all muzzle-loaders. Wellington, March 18. All the Hudson’s immigrants were open for engagements yesterday, and all the single females were engaged at rates higher than on any previous occasion, varying from 10s to 20s per week. Farm hands found employment rapidly, but the demand for tradesmen was not brisk. Opunake, March 18. The Native Question. The meeting at Pariah aka has turned out a comp ete fiasco. The question of confiscated territory was not raised, and although some 2500 Maoris from all parts of the North Island cawo to hear Te Whiti, and possibly to see the fulfilment of some of his prophecies, all that could be got from him was “ the expected one ” (probably meaning Sheehan) was not to hand. Other expenses amount to .£4OO. Invercargill, March 18. The Volunteer Demonstration. In the Volunteer demonstration about 500 acceptances have been received, and replies from ten more companies are waited for in order to advise the railway authorities. Enormous Sole. A sole was captured on the beach yesterday as big as a turbot. It was considerably over 2ft. long and 18in. wide, and weighed six and a half pounds. Invercargill, March 18. The Irish Catholics had a fine soiree and ball last night. Bishop Moran preached to a large congregation in the morning, and touched on the education question. About .£6O was collected at various churches on Sunday for the Kaitaugata fund.
