AQUATICS.

KAIAPOI REGATTA. The morning opened well so far as the weather went, but towards the time for starting a northerly wind sprang up, which was a good beam breeze for the sailers, and did not materially interfere with the first races. From the bar to the town the river was in splendid order for the races till 3 p.m., when the shallows began to appear. Punctuality in the events was the order of the day, and Mr Day acted up to the wishes of the committee. All the events, considering the apathy amongst boating men for some time, wore well contested, there being three entries in all the events except the Champion Four and Sculling races. For the Champion race the Canterbury and Cure Clubs had a stiff contest. The former had the advantage in showy stroke, but the latter certainly had strength on its side. The day was observed as a close holiday, and the buildings fairly blossomed with bunting. By the midday train and various vehicles a large concourse of spectators was brought to the ground. The arrangements of the committee were good. At the winning flag on the wharf near Monk and Co.’s, there was a boarded in enclosure for the committee and its friends. At the opposite side of the river on Oram and Hansen’s wharf the Eaiapoi band at intervals played lively airs. Along both banks and the bridge every available spot was occupied by spectators. Sailing Race, open to all comers ; six miles. First prize, £5; second, £l. Lotus, cutter (Hill) 1 Dot cutter (Evans) 2 The Ariel (Dudley) also entered. The Dot had a ten minutes’ and the Lotus two minutes’ keel allowance. The Lotus rounded the buoy at the bar first, two minutes ahead of the others, the Ariel and Dot equal. After rounding the Ariel’s .-udder was carried away. The Lotus won by five minutes. Junior Pair-oared Rack ; under twenty years ; H miles ; open to clubs ; Ist prize, £4; 2nd, £l. Sylph (U.R.C)—T. D. Kesteven, J. T. Smith (stroke), H. D. Manning (cox.) ... 1 Cure (Cure B C.) —A. Winterbonrn), C. Wright (stroke), P. Weston (cox.) ... 2 The Cam, C.R.0., was entered, but Bolton and Grierson were too late at the start. The Sylph went off with a lead, and held it, winning by three length#.

Champion Four-oared Race; 3 miles; onen to all Clubs in the colonj; Ist prize, £2O • 2nd £5. Cam (Cure B.C.j— T. Mellor, R. Day, J. Perrin, G. Wright (stroke), F. Weston

(cox) 1 Ilyssus (C.R.C.)- A. C. Lean, J. E. Lanauze, W. M. Ollivier, J. 0. Jones (stroke) Dickson (cox) 2 The boats started from Toggle Line, the latter on the north bant, and kept their respective courses to the finish. The Cam went off first and steadily gained about three lengths to Ellen’s house. Off Lock’s the Cure came on, and, being inside, passed the cross current first. The boats now being level caused intense excitement among the vast concourse of spectators, who cheered lustily. Wright began to put it on, though both crews seemed to have had enough, and the Cure forged ahead threequarters or almost a clear length. At Revell’s Wharf Jones called his men, who gamely spurted, and amid intense excitement, the Cam gradually went up to half, and as the winning gun went left the Cure only a short nose to spare. The cheering was very loud, and the public wonld not have been disappointed if the prize had been divided. Our reporter, who has followed regattas for the last ten years, adds he never saw a fairer race. Junior Double £culls; all comers, Ist prize, .£3 ; 2nd. £l. MakoMako, Cure Club—Manning, C.
