The Ngaruawahia races to-day were well attended. Loafer’s owner took him to the Fiako races. Considerable interest was excited in expectation of a contest between him and Sports man. Handicap Hurdle Race, 20 sovs, and a sweepstake of 1 sov. Two miles, over eight jumps. Sportsman 1 Robin Hood 2 Emigrant 3 Ngaruawahia Cup, of 40 sovs, with a sweepstake of 1 sov. Two miles. Wizard 1 Sullivan 2 Memento 3 TAMAKI RACES. At these races the Maiden Plate was won by Robinson Crusoe, and the Steeplechase Handicap of 25 sovs, miles, by Harry Mount. East Tamaki Handicap, 50 sovs. Two miles. Yattapa 1 Polly Plum 2 Dun 3 A protest was entered against Yattapa for going inside the post. HAWKE’S BAY RACES. [Press Special Wire.J Monday. March 17. The inaugural meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Racing Club took place to-day at Pakowhai. The weather was fine and warm. The attendance was good, between two and three thousand being on the ground. The racing, on the whole, was fair, but the arrangements might have been better, particularly in respect to punctuality in running off the various events. The Cup, for instance, was set down for 2 30, but was net started until 3.20, and it was about the same with the other events. Hurdle Race—loo sovs., 2£ miles, over 7 hurdles. Grey Momus 1 Tarawera_ 2 Wanganui 3 Eight ran. Skysail bolted; Waiarapa fell after jumping the third hurdle, and Tamatea fell at the last hurdle. It was a good race between Grey Momus and Tarawera, but the former won rather easily. Inauouratiye Stakes of 40 sovs.; threequarters of a mile. Never Miss ... 1 West End 2 Monanatiri 3 Five ran. It was won by three lengths. Hawke’s Bat Cup of 250 sovs., with sweep of 5 sovs., added for starters. Two miles. Sinking Fund 1 Little Wonder 2 Lara 3 Ten started, Pinfire, Bribery, Laertes, Grey Momus, Xantippe, and several other were scratched. Sinking Fund made nearly all the running, and came in an easy winner by about ten lengths. Otupai was last but one, never having been in it from the start. A protest was lodged against Sinking Fund by Mr R. Farmer, owner of Lidy Elizabeth, on the ground that Sinking Fund was not accepted for at the proper time. The matter will be considered by the stewards tomorrow. Maiden Plate of 50 sovs. One-and-a-half-miles. Kaokaoroa 1 Pohukura . 2 Day and Martin 3 Seven started. The event was won by two lengths. District Plate of 60 sovs. One mile. Lalla Rookh 1 Hail Storm 2 West End 3

Eight started. There was a false start, in which all the horses went except Camellia, who was left at the post, HaiLtom making all the running and coming in first. The race was then run over again. Camellia bolted when running well forward, and the result was as is given, Lalla Eookh winning rather easily by three lengths. Consolation Handicap of 30 sovs. Distance, 1 mile. Entrance, 1 sot. Little Wonder 1 Skysail 2 Merlin 3

This race was ran in the dark. Eight started. This concluded a good day’s sport, though somewhat prolonged, it being a quarter to seven when the last race was finished
