Ashburton, March 11. ACCIDENT TO THE SOUTHERN EXPRESS. The Christchurch express raa into a goods train at Ashburton station at 10.45 a.m. to-day. The collision was in consequence of the points not being shifted in time. There were four carriages and a van attached to the express, and all were more or less injured, hut the passengers all escaped, though some received trifling hurts. The American engine, drawing express No. 88 was much injured. The English engine attached to the goods train, which was standing when run into, escaped with slight injury. Several of the trucks behind it were, however, much shattered. When the collision took place there was much confusion among the passengers, some of whom jumped out. The guard called out just before the accident. The drivers, and in fact every one concerned, showed great presence of mind. The damage i« said to exceed £dUO. Many ascribe the accident to the great want of space at the Ashburton station.
