Pafea, a chief on the Waimate Plains, having carefully considered the question of the railway across that country, for wliich Government intend taking measures, has determined to make a clearing where he thinks it will go, and has asked that a station may be placed there, ibis speaks well for the future. The " K"ew Zealand Jurist." The " New Zealand Jurisi " is in future to be published in Wellington, the proprietor and editor, Mr G. B. Barton, having come to reside here. Hie report of Mr Barton's appointment as Assistant Law Officer is not confirmed. The Wellington City Loan. The City Council to-night are to discuss the proposed J 2100,000 loan for the formation and repairs of streets. A cablegram has been received reporting the ship Warnock as having sailed from Plymouth with immigrants for Wellington.

Heavy rain continues. Three inches fell between Monday and Wednesday. To-night's it is hoped will briug down logs to the mills, which have been without timber, owing to the want of any freshes, for a lon» period.
