[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Timaru, March 5. Maritana has been scratched by Mr Kay for all her Timaru engagements. At the Board of Education to-day returns from various school committees were received, and resulted in Messrs Belfield, Tancred, and the Kev Barclay being elected in the place of the retiring members. Permission was given to the High School Board to use the house just built for the head master of the Timaru Public School as a temporary high Bchool. At a public meeting last night a committee was appointed to collect subscriptions for the Kaitangata sufferers, and at the meeting of thia committee to-day the borough was divided into four parts for canvassing purposes. Besides the Anazi barque despatched, and the Loweswater loading here direct for London, the Charlwood, Margaret Galbraitb, and two other large vessels have been chartered. A very large number of farmers are shipping on their own account. [Press Special Wire.] Auckland, March 5. Mr Swanson, M.H.R., received the following telegram from the Attorney-General on the result of yesterday's contest: —" Hearty congratulations on the success of friends of national education in City West election—Eobt. Stout." A meeting of the friends of education will 'be called this week to consider what steps should ha taken with reference to Dr. Wallii», the sitting member for Citv West, also to form a committee for the purpose of purging City West roll. A conference of Cricket Clubs resolved to spend .£l5O to extend the Domain cricket ground. A pigeon shooting match between Bishop, of Auckland, and Henderson, of Waikato, for £lO a side, resulted in a victory for Bishop, Henderson giving up at the twenty-sacond bird. The St. Donald, arrived from Levuka, brings later news. A meeting of planters passed a resolution in favor of the issue of Crown Grants, and remonstrating against the evident intention to restrict the removal of natives from ones§iflland to another for labor purposes. They complained of the great scarcity of labor. The finances for the colony show a revenue of .£61,000 and an expenditure of £65,000. The expenditure for 1879 is estimated at £74,000 and the revenue at £75,000. Seven hundred bushels of maize were sold in Lovuka at 3s lOd per bushel. The schooner brings to Auckland a cargo of maize and sugar. Wellington, March 5. The Commissioners on higher education adjourned their sittings till the ?4th inst The Commission will leave for Christchurch about the beginning of April About £350 has been collected in aid of the Kaitangata fund. Hokitika., March 5. The sitting of the Jackson Ray Commissioners commenced yesterday. Dr. Giles, Messrs Whitefoord and Bunny (chairman) are the commissioners, and Mr Jordan is secretary. James Murdoch presented serious charges against Mr McParlane, Government Agent. He -was the only witness examined. The Stella was sent to Jackson's Bay to fetch McFarlane, and arrived in the roadstead on her return this fternoon.
