SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Monday, March 3. | The Council met at the usual hour. , Present—His Worship the Mayor, Oount cillors Pavitt, Foster, Jones, Andrews, White, Langdown, Brown, Hall. A letter apologising , for the absence of Or. Charters was read, stating that he would be in Dunedin on business. GAS WORKS EOAD. [ The following resolution was moved by Cr. ’ Hall, and seconded by Or. Jones: —“That > the solicitor prepare the necessary deed or 1 deeds to convey the land given to widen the ‘ east side of the Gas Works road from railway to Opawa road.” After some little dis- ■ cuasion this resolution was carried. ‘ SUBSCRIPTION LISTS. The Mayor brought forward the Kaitangata 1 relief fund, and a list was laid on the table. ’ The Glasgow Bank relief fund list was also laid on the table. Cr. Hall asked the Council to patronise an entertainment shortly to be given in Syden- ! ham, the proceeds of which would be devoted to the Kaitangata relief fund. CORRESPONDENCE. 1 A letter was received from Mr Aikin on behalf of ratepayers on Lincoln road, complaining about the level of the footpath. Also from Mr Tophliss, asking the Council to put a bridge over culvert in front of his premises ; referred to works committee. Also from the contractor of works at Sandridge, asking per--1 mission to see the Council. Le-tve was granted. Also from Mr Stanley Edwards, relating to the proposed new bridge over the 1 Hoathcoto, accompanied by plans ; referred ' to the public works committee. DEPUTATION FEOM BANDBIDGB, A deputation from the ratepayers of Sand- ' ridge, consisting of Messrs Smith and Duckworth, attended at the Council to call atten--1 tion to the loose manner in which the street contract was being carried out, and they also wished to call attention to the rapid spread of typhoid fever and other diseases caused by the foul state of Jackson’s Creek, and to request the Council to call the attention of the Drainage Board to the fact. The Council promised that both these matters should have attention. BANDEIDGK BTBKET CONTBACT. Mr Jackman, contractor for street forming at Sandridge, was admitted. He applied for a progress payment, stating that he had applied to the surveyor, but had not received any answer. The matter being in the hands of the works committee, a letter written by that committee, which they proposed to send to Mr Jackman, was read, declining to authorise any progress payment, on the ground that there was not sufficient progress made with the work to justify any payment. Cr. Hall moved, and Or. Foster seconded — “ That the Council approve of the contents of the letter of the works committee to Mr Jackman.” An amendment was moved by Cr. White, seconded by Cr. Jones pro forma —“ That this letter be referred back to the works committee with power to act.” The amendment was carried by five to two. REPORT OF WORKS COMMITTEE. Your committee have the honor to report that the works taken out of Mr Wagner’a hand on the Lincoln road has been completed. The lowering of the footpath on Colombo road, where the concrete channelling baa lately been made has been completed, and your committee would recommend that the attention of the Drainage Board be directed to the fact that the drains under Third street and Gasworks road are not sufficient to carry away the storm water. Report adopted. LIGHTING COMMITTEE. This Committee asked for power to get a sample lamp, and also to call for tenders for the lamps for the borough. Power granted. FINANCE. The report of the Finance Committee was read as follows : —The receipts for the past fortnight have been —Rates, £lO 11s 2d ; dog fees, £26; deposit on contract, £5; total, £4l 11s 2d. The credit balance at the bank on Ist March was £2330 Os 4d. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £Bl Os 9d. Outstanding rates £62 5s 7d. Report adopted. THE SANITARY COMMITTEE. This committee reported that they call the attention of the works committee to the urgent necessity of clearing out the whole of the side channels of the borough with as little delay as possible.

The committee had also under consideration the desirability of appointing an inspector of nuisances, who might combine the duties of that office with other duties.

His Worship the Mayor, with Cra Brown, Charters, and Pavitt, by invitation of the sanitary committee of the City Council, met them at tr>e City Council Chambers, and agreed to re-comr-end to tins Council the appointment of a surveyor to confer with Mr Walkden as to the coat of forming and channelling the south side of the South Town belt. In the discussion of this report, a question was raised as to the standing of Cr. Charters at this conference, he not being a member of the sanitary committee. Tho report wai then considered seriatim. The Council then adjourned. A meeting of the works committee was afterwards held.
