ROAD BOARDS.

HEATHCOTE. The above Board met on Friday, the 21st inst., at 10 a.m. Present —Messrs K. Clephano (cb.firman), '-V. Attwood, J. i>’.;*/eil), and VV. Hi.wker, Mr *ttwo-d apologised for Mr Bruce. The clerk reported the receipts for the fortnight to be £.-4 Os. Mr Pavitt waited on the Board wi.h a petition signed by 152 ratepayers, a»king that a public meeting should be called to con idcr the question as to the best site for a bridge over the Heathcoto uiver near the Christchurch quay. It was decided to call a meeting for the 10th March at 73 • p.m., in the Hoard room. Ferry road. Mr i corner, sen., waited on the Board re lowering footpath in Phillip street, and offering to pay cost of a me. It was decided to do it. The following correspondence was read and considered: Mrs Peel, a king that a public meeting re bridge over Heathcote should be called for luesday or Wedne-day evening next The Board regretted that they could not comply with the request, as the Ordinance requires not less than fourteen days' notice to be given of any meeting held on requisition of ratepayers. Colonial Secretary’s office, re extension of time under Hating Act, 1876. Crown Lands office, Wellington, and J. Mar.-hman. Esq., re Canal reserve. The clerk to give the solicitors instructions to prepare deed. Glasgow Bank relief fund. The clerk was instructed to advertise that subscriptions would be recived at the office. Avon Load Board, re gas lamp on Stanmore bridge. To bo informed that the Board are willing to bear half t e cost. It was resolved to cull for tenders to complete the contract of E. Jackman. The tender of E. Evans, for leasing ground was accepted. After passing accounts for .£394 9s Bd, the Boat’d adjourned.

COURTENAY. A meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday, the 18th in t. Present—Hon. Colonel Brett (chairman), Messrs Mathiis, Coutta, Anson, and Gough. The report of the surveyor was read and considered. Considerable discussion having taken place with reference to the transfer of the Board’s banking account from the Bank of Australisia to the Bank of New Zealand, it was resolved—“ That the action taken by the chairman and two other members of the Board in the matter be confirmed.” The following corresponfence was read; —From the Bank of New Zealand, acknowledging receipt of the Board’s letter of the 18th nit., transmitting cheque for the sum of .£9OOO, to be placed as a fixed deposit with the bank for a period of twelve months. Two letters from the same, advising the Board of the payment of outstanding cheques from the Bank of Australasia. The i lerk stated that he had replied to these, confirming payment of the same as requested Circular from the office of the Colonial Secretary with regard to certain provisions of The Rating Act, 1876. From Mr E. C. Latter, forwarding cheque for cost of preparing a copy of the valuation roll of the Courtenay district for the year 1878. Receipt acknowledged. From Mr A. Cardale, asking that a road may be laid off from Wai eka to the Homobusn railway station, ac oompanied with tracing showing position of the road desired. From the South Malvern R ‘ad Board with reference to the above road. From the same, requesting that this Board will cause the road leading from section 29401 towards Waireka, to be formed From Mr G. F. Ritso, requesting permission from the Board to erect gates across the Homebush road, near Racecourse Hill. From Mr Naave, requesting that a portion of New. ton’s and Coal > ramway road may be metalled, and the road between sections 11330 and 13526, near Lawford, may be formed. Resolved—- “ That the chairman be reqnea'ed to apply to the Chief Surveyor desiring him to cause the road from Waireka to the Homebush railway station, as desired in Mr Cardalo’s communication, to be laid off at an early date.” Resolved —“That the South Malvern Road Board be made acquainted with the Beard’s action in the matter above mentioned ; also that the Board do not see the necessity of forming the road mentioned in their letter • f the 6th in-t. at present.” The clerk was instructed to write to Mr Kitso, regretting the inability of the Board to comply with his requo.-t. Also, to infer Jlr Neave that the traffic requirements of the Newton’s and Ooul Tramway road are not snffi ient, in the estimation of tho Board, to justify the expense required for the metalling of the same, and that the formation of the road requested would oe advertised with other works. An application from Me-srs Maxwell and Mathias, for a pipe culvert across the Herndon an" (>reen dale road, was considered, and their request granted, subject to their paying for the labor only of putting in the same after the work has been executed by the ..oard. The surveyor was instructed to cail for tenders for cutting down thistles on some of tho main roads of the. district. Also, to call for tenders for painting the Road Board stable, gates, and the immigrant cottage* belonging to the Board. Also to cause the approaches to tho crossing nerrDe lacecourse Hill railway station to be metall d. A Iso to communicate with the Managers of the Pkess Company and “Lyttelton limes” requesting to oe informed what discount they are prepar dt» allow on the Board’s advertising account. Also, to accept Mr Beatty’s tender for cutting near tho Selwyn if he is willing to complete the work according to the terms of the specification. Also to advertise for tenders for various road work. Tne pay-sheet amounting to .£907 0s Ud having been adopted and phased for payment, the Board adjourned till Tuesday, March 11th inst., at 12.30 p.m.
