HENLEY ON TAIEEI EEGATTA. [Prcs§ Special Wire.] Dunedin, February 21. The Henley on Taieri regatta took place today, and was well attended. The following are the results : Ladies' Plate.—The final heat was a contest between the Excelsion and Otago Bowing Clubs, and resulted in an easy victory for the latter by two clear lengths The second was a row over for the Union Steamship Bowing Club. Henley Challenge Fours —ln the final heat the Union Club was pitted against the Bluff boat, but as the crew of the latter have not come to Dnnedin, the Union Club rowed over. In the second heat the United Tradesmen's Club and the Otago Rowing Club were the competitors. A good race was expected, and the spectators were considerably disappointed when they saw the blue and white stripe of the Otago men emerge into the st:aight, pulling easily, and evidently performing a solo. It appears that after the crews had rowed about a dozen strokes the United Tradesmen ran into the bank, and got so hopelessly mixed up with rushes that their opponents got a lead which it was impossible to make up, so Thompson's civ.w gave up. o.i one side it was asserted that the start w.'S unfair, the United Tradesmen's crew being head into the bunk, and on the other that it was want of management on the part of the United Tradesmen that caused the muddle. No protest waj entered. Junior Pairs. — The first heat of this race resulted in another fiisco. 'lhe Dunedin and the United Tradesmen's Clubs were the competitors, but the former had virtually a row ov<r, as the others gave up after hilf the distance had been rowed. It seems that a series of fouls occurred owing to the Dnnedin boys (who pulled without a coxswain) rowing all over the river. Why the Unit dT adesine i gave up is unknown, as they seemed to come out of the fouls better than the others. 'lhe second heat of the junior pairs was bebetween the Ot'igo Club and the Union Club. It a splendid race. Looking end on they appeared to come up the straight well together. Otago steaming rather wide. At the gun f re the Union were two lengths ahead of their ad versaries, &nd were declared the winners by that distance. Champion Pairs—The first heat was betweea the Union and Dunedin Clubs. Although the crews kept the stems of their boats abretst all the way up, the race was a very one-sided affair, for as they came near home it was seen that the Union men were pulling one-handed, and that well witbiu themselves, while their opponents were straining every nerve. Half a dozen strokes the other side of the winningpost the Dunedin actua'ly forged ahead, but Mercer put on a pound or two, and away his boat went like an arrow, winning cleverly by about a foot. The second heat of the champion pairs was won easily by the Otago Kowing Club from the Fxcelsior. The final heat was won by the Otago Rowing Club. In the Ladies' Plate the final heat was won by the Otago Rowing Club. The Sculling race was won by S. Turton. The Henley challenge fours final heat was won by the Otago Rowing Club, and the Junior pairs final heat by the Dunedin Rowing ( lub. KAIAPOI REGATTA.
