Dreadful Explosion at the Kaitangata Coal-mine.
[Bt Telegraph.] [fbom oue own coeeespondent.] Dunedin, February 21. A dreadful explosion in the Kaitangata Company’s coal mine occurred this morning. One boy was killed, Forty men were inside. The result is as yet unknown. Later. The boy killed at the mine was blown a distance of fifty from the entrance. It will bo some hoars before the men in the pit can bo got at. It is feared all will be suffocated. Dr. Smith, of Balclutha, is in attendance. Later. One more dead body has been recovered. The rescuers experience great difficulty owing to the fire-damp. Several men have been brought up senseless. [PEB PRESS AGENCY.] Dunedin, February 21. Between eight and nine o’clock this morning the Kaitangata coal mine exploded. Edward Dunn, son of Gorge Dunn, was at the time entering the drive with his horse. They were blown about 50 yards clear of the pit mouth. The boy was killed on the spot. There arc some thirty-six men inside. None of them are yet recovered. All available efforts are being made to get at them. Immediately after the explosion Mr T. B. Griffin, the station master, desp .tched the engine Jeru -alem for I r. Smith at Balclutha, who was on the scene of the accident within twenty-five minutes. Groat excitement prevails. Latest. Eight bodies have been recovered. There are still twenty-five in the mine. No hopes of any being alive.
