WRECK OP THE TAUPO.
Tauranga February 18. The Taupo struck a rock at the entrance of Beacon Point. The engine room became full of water. The passengers and mails were safely landed, and the cargo discharged. The steamer Kakikati went to the rescue. The place where the Taupo grounded at Tauranga is' Stoney Point. The channel here, although deep, is not more than half a-cable s width, with a sharp turn, and the strong” tide is liable to get the vessel ashore before the he»m takes effect. The Vaupo is ashore as reported, but they hope to get her off next tide and ton her ashore pn tho sand.
/ Auckland, February 18. A singular accident happ med at Freeman’s Bay. An excavation for a culvert had undermine! a lamp-post, and, when the limp-lighter ran up his ladder, the post gave way. precipitating the man and ladder and a largue quantity of earth into tbe cutting, a depth of_6tt. The man was partly burned and severely injured on his back and le s. Mr Hobbs, M H R., telegraphed urging the Government to issue land scrip immediately, so that it can he exercised at the approaching sale. Ihe I ducation Commission are still taking evidence in the matter of higher education. The meeting of the Auckland Institute showed satisfactory progress. The Greytown School Committee have chosen the Rev. Mr Pa ritt for head <■ aster, and Miss M. Maher, from the National School of Ireland* as mistress of the Greytown school. Wellington. February 18 The “Chronicle” is informed that the Government have received further correspondence from the Agent General, enclosing a correspondence from Messrs Galbraith and Denny, well known ship owners, re proposing direct steam service They suggest a two monthly service as sufficient for the present requirements. They propose to supply three steamers of a superior class, with an average spe< dof I2j knots. The outward voyage by Cape of Good Hope to occupy forty-two days. They want an eight years contract and ask for a subsidy of eighty thousand annually. Sir J. Vogel urges the Government to accept the service.
