AOUATICS.

The three racing events advertised to take place in connection with the Canterbury Rowing Club came off on the Avon on Satur ! ay afternoon. The first race was a challenge from A. C. Nottingham and C. B. Mann to row J. Grierson and E. M. Boulton, for Mr Blakistou’s prizes. The course was one mile, from Pratt’s to the Willows below the boat sheds. After a capital contest, the latter crew came off victoriously. The race between the single and married members of the committee came next, but did not prove nearly so interesting and close a contest as was anticipated, the single men jumping away from the start, and winning as they liked. The third race was a challenge from Allison to row G. C. La auze. This proved a very hollow affair, Lanauze having things entirely his own way from the starting to the winning post. The following are the details PAIR OAH RACE. Cygnet, south bank—J. Grierson and E. Boulton (J. Laurie, c0x.)...' 1 Swan, north baak —A. C. Nottingham and C. B. Mann (C. ilixon, cox.) 2 The two crews caught the water at the same moment, but Grierson and Boulton were the first to get their boat well under weigh. After going about fifty yards the Cygnet had a derided lead, which was incr. ased to nearly two lengths just before reaching Cowliahaw’s. Here isottingham quickened nis stroke, and commenced to overhaul the leading boat. After fairly rounding thecornerandcomingintothe -traight, Grierson and Boult u put on an extra spurt, and again drew away, and wen a good race by a couple ot lengths FOUR-OAK RACE. —MARRIED V. SINGLE. Single -r- leciric, south bank L. M.OUivier, stroke; J. C. Brewster, No 3; Collins, No. 2 ; J. It. Evans, bow (Dunnage cux) 1 Married — t yue, north bank—,J O. Jones, stroke ; Tayler, No. 3 ; A, R. Pavitt, No. 2 ; E. J. Paul, Mr Grierson got the boats well in li c for an even start. At the given signal, Ollivior’s crewgot the Electric away splendidly, hut the .! yne seemed particularly slow in getting well under

weigh. After the first few strokes the t.h-ctrie toi k a good lead, and though Jones’ crow tried their beat to overhaul the boot, it wa* Boon seen they were no match for their opponents, the single men keeping the lead the whole dist nice, and winning easily. •SOULLINO KAOS. Wye—6. 0. Lauauze ... ••• ••• I Exe—Allison ... ... ••• 2 Owing to the narrowness of the river, and the consequent difficulty to get sculling boats to race abreast without fouling, it was decided to start the boats fitty yards apart, the winning posts to be pi ced at a like distance. Lanauzo won the toss, and naturally elected to take the foremost position Immediately after starting it was easily seen by his stylo of sculling that rtllison stood no possible chance of keeping anywhere within his dir t -.nee e.very stroke of his oppor cut left him farther in the rear, Lanauzo rowing steadily away a oil winning as be liked, w th a good number of lengths to spare.
