ENGLAND V. THE COLONIES. The above match was commenced on Saturday last. England won the toss and went in, Corfe and Ashby being their first representatives. Beard commenced the bowling for the colonies, and in his first over a shby was caught at short leg. Moore followed receiving the first ball from Turner wbieh he placed for a single. Runs coming rather quickly off the last bowler W. Frith relieved him, and his third ball proved fatal to Moore, who was well caught at short leg by Turner, but not before he had made 26 by some fine all-round hitting, a 5 and three 4’s in succession being his chief hits. Neilson joined Corfe, and the score quickly increased to 68, when the former was bowled by Beard. Corfe was bowled by Frith in the next over without any alteration in the score. The latter played very steadily for his runs, but did not seem to have so much confidence as usual Wilson and Conran made, a long stand, and it was not until 77 appeared on the board that the former was caught by Watson at short stop. He made 9 by a fine hit to square leg for 4, a 3 and a2. Stevens then came, and after making about 1-0 gave a difficult chance to short stop,, but it was not taken. After this the score advanced rapidly, chiefly by the aid of Conran, who was hitting any ovcrpitcbe i ball for 3’s and 4’s. He sent one nicely to leg for 5, but at last in attempting a fast run, which his partner did not deem safe, ho was run out for a nice total “of 31 made without a chance. He has much improved in his play since the commencement of the season, which is probably owing to his having become more accustomed to the light of our ground. Louglen only made two singles before he was bowled by Frith, Seven for 119. Morice quickly put together 11 by a 5 a 4, and two singles, but was then bowled by a beauty from Board. Mac Donnell assisted iStevens in bringing the score to 163, when the former was well caught by Hartland at short slip for 19, which includes two hits for 4. Secretan came, but soon lost his partner Stevens, who was bowled by Beard, after playing a steady innings for 32, the total at the fall of the last wicket being 168.
