Out of seven candidates for the senior examination, five have passed ; and eighteen out of twenty-one for the junior. The poll for the city election was officially declared. Mr Adams, in returning thanks, attributed his majority to his unswerving advocacy of secular education, and Mr Pitt his defeat to the introduction of the religious element into the contest. Timaru, February 9, The body of Captain Evans, who was drowned off the ketch Palmerston in a heavy gale in September last, was found on Saturday afternoon in the shingle in Caroline Bay. It was only recognisable by the boots and shirt. The diving apparatus for the Harbor Board arrived from London on Saturday. It is supplied with an electric light. At Waimate Pobco Court on Friday, Sarah Steele and Robert Lee were committed for trial for uttering forged cheques in the name of the female pri-oner’s husband. Similar charges are hanging over them at Christchurch. The next Temuka and Geraldine cattle show is to be held on March i,7tn. The Milford Harbor Board hold their first meeting on 1 uesday. The newly-elected Timaru board also meet on the same day. A public meeting is to bo held at Temnka on Tuesday to urge the Government to proceed with the inland railway from Oxford at once. : The Burke’s Pass races on Friday were well attended, and the events well contested for a country meeting. A very heavy nor’-wester is blowing this afternoon, aud the heat is intense.

Mr John Odivier has been appointed auditor for the New Zealand University The telegrams forwarded from October to December, 1878 numbered 364.(L0, showing an incr ase of 61,216 on the previous quarter. The cash received was £2O 903, or an increase of £3169. The value of Government telegrams during the same period was £5916. The Governor has appointed Hugh Macdonald, M.D., a memb r of the commission to inspect and report upon the state and condition of immigrants and immigration ships upon their arrival at the port of Lyttelton, vice Dr. Donald. February 9. The first meeting of the Waitaki High School Board will be beld at the County Council Chambers at Oamaru on the 28th February instant.
