The Customs for January amount to £ being an increase of nearly seven thousand pounds over those for December and seven hundred pounds over the corresponding quarter last year. Mr Saunders addressed a full meting of the Cheviot electors at the Waikari last evening, and was well received. Ho made a vigorous onslaught on Mr De Latour's presumption in saying that Sir Q. Grey's policy was of a liberal character. The term Liberal, he showed, was grossly missused by the Government for party purposes, and his allusions as to who the three scorpions of the Assembly were carried his audience with him. He spoke very ably on the questions of education and the franchise, and concluded by asserting that the C .tholics, who refused to vote for certain members, would find an immense Protestant inlluence would bear against them. In a similar way, he said that the teetotalers had been met, and their action counteracted by the larger powers of the licensed victualler's p'U'ty. Au unanimous vote of thanks to Messrs Bowen, Richardson, and Saunders for their efforts to forward railway extension north, and a vote of confidence in Mr Saunders' ability to represent the Cheviot district were carried. Donedin, February 7. Messrs Cargills have received the following wool telegram, dated February 4th. The next series will commence on the 18th. The new arrivals are limited to 250,000 bales.
