BOROUGH COUNCILS.

* SYDENHAM. A special meeting of this Council was held at the office of the Mayor, Main street, at noon. Present, his Worship the Mayor, Ors. Pavitt, Hall, Charters, White, Brown, Jones, Andrew, Foster. The Mayor said that he had called the meeting to elect a solicitor to the Borough. A letter was read from Messrs Joyce and Williams, stating that if elected they would he very willing to act as solicitors to the Council. Mr Charters moved, “ That Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw be appointed as solicitors to the Council.” Or. Hall seconded the motion. Cr. Brown moved as an amendment, “ That Mr John Joyce be appointed as solicitor.” He had heard that Mr Joyce had been for some years solicitor to the municipality of Port Chalmers, besides which ho was a resident in the borough. Or. Pavitt seconded the motion. Cr. Andrews moved—“ That Messrs McConnell and Douglas be appointed as solicitors to the Council.” A discussion on a point of order here arose an to whether the candidates should bo nominated, or whether the propositions could be taken as at an ordinary meeting. His Worship said that he thought it was provided by the Standing Orders that the officers of the Council should be elected by nomination. Ultimately, after more discussion, it was resolved to take nominations, and the following wore put, viz.; —Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw, Joyce and Williams, and McConnell and Douglas. On the first voting, Messrs Joyce and Williams were thrown out, and the voting was then taken between Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw and McConnell and Douglas, the result being—for the former five, and the latter three. Or. Charters moved —“ That the clerk write to Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw, and inform them that they have been elected.” Cr. Hall seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Or. Jones moved—“ That the Mayor and Or. Charters wait on Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw to ascertain on what terms they will conduct the business of the Council.” Or.
