BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Thursday, February 6. The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education for North Canterbury was held at 3 o’clock at the Normal School. Present — Mets™ John luglis (chairman), H R. Webb, A Dunca , E 6. J. Stevens, H. J. Tancred, and the Eev. 0 Phaser. BUSINESS DONE BY THE CHAIRMAN. The Beard approved of the business done by the chairman since the last meeting. A number of reports from the inspector as to the progress of various schools was laid upon the table. APPOINTMENTS. The seal of the Board was placed upon a number oi: teachers’ appointments. BAST CHRISTCHURCH. An application was made by the head master for this school for an increased allowance for house rent. The writer pointed out that rents were very much more than when he first received his appointment. The application was strongly recommended by the school committee. The Chairman stated that the masters’ salary had been made up to £SOO a year. The Board declined to grant the application at present, but would consider it again at a more auspicious time. AMBBBLEY. The question of the side school and a teacher was ordered to stand over until the next meeting, KAIAPOI. A letter was read from a householder at this place, asking the Board if it would receive a resolution from a meeting of householders not called by the chairman of school committee. The Chairman said they would receive any resolution passed by a meeting of householders, but they would not pledge themselves to act upon it. KAIAPOI BOROUGH SCHOOL. A letter was read from the school committee of this place with regard to the readjustment of salaries in the borough school. Among other things which the committee proposed was to reduce the salary of the head master from £3OO to £2OO, which it was stated was sure to lead to his resignation. The Board resolved to reply to the communication that they could not agree to the application of the committee, unless they would consent to the system of a mixed school as formerly recomended by the Board. SYDENHAM. A letter was read from the committee of this school proposing a certain readjustment among the teachers. It was resolved that Mrs Bowmaker should receive £2OO a year, and that the committee he empowered to advertise for a second master at £IBO. EICOARTON SCHOOL. A number of tenders were opened for the repair of this school. That of Mr W. Williams was accepted for £74 14s. CONTRACTS. The seal of the Board was affixed to certain contracts. WEEDON. The tender of Mr Wolfe was referred back to the committee with a recommendation that they should accept it. doyauchellb’s bay. The tenders for the repairs of this school Were referred to the chairman. mandeVillb plains. The committee of this school applied for a grant for the erection of a verandah. The Board resolved to reply that they had no money to grant for the purpose. WAIAU. The Board decided to obtain an additional acre of ground at this place for a school site. AMBBELBY. Plans for additions to the school at this place were laid upon the table, and after having been examined it was resolved to call for tenders. ASHBURTON. A letter was read from the school committee, asking for permission to apply to the Government for four quarter acre sites. Application granted. HOBOBATA SCHOOL. It was resolved to apply for a site of fourteen acres for a school &c., at this place. WEST OUST. The committee applied for £2O for the purchase of scientific apparatus. Postponed until the next meeting. KAIKOUBA. A letter was read from the school committee at this place, stating that some people had voted at the late election who had no right to have done so.' One man had a vote who did not reside within the district, and during the polling the chairman refused to take his vote. The matter Was referred to the Board’s solicitor. SCHOOL ELECTIONS. A list of the names of places where no election had taken place was read. It comprised about a dozen places. The Board fixed the date for the election for next Monday fortnight at eight o’clock. A list of the names of places where the elections were incomplete were also read. The same date was fixed in this instance for meeting*. A list of places from which no information whatever as to the elections had been received was read. The secretary was instructed in these instances to write for information. BALANOB BHBBT. The balance sheet to the end of the year was laid on the table for the information of members. The Board then went into committee, and afterwards adjourned.
