RIFLE SHOOTING.
[by marksman.J Engineer Yoltjnteers y. Civilians. This match, resulting from a challenge by the Engineers’ Company, was fired at the Cashmere range on Saturday afternoon, commencing at 1 p.m., and resulted in an easy win for the volunteers. Owing to tho absence of tho Kowai men, W. Cameron and J. B. Hunter, who are civilians, tho match was left a little more open, but it is questionable if the victory would have been reversed had they boon present. No brilliant scoring was mode on either side, save by Sergeant Buckley, whose score of 61 represents a good average at each range. At the 600 yards every one fell off—and this is invariably tho case, from some unexplainable cause—l2 points being the highest score made. The strong cross wind blowing during the match will, however, account for a good deal, as the windage allowance at the last range was fully 7ft.
The conditions of the match were—lo men each side ; ranges, 200, 400, 500, and GOO yards ; any position ; 5 shots at each range ; no sighting shots ; the losing team to pay the expenses of the day. The scores were as follows; ENGINEERS

A return match will bo fired shortly, when the full Civilian strength will bo thrown against the engineers, and a more exciting contest may be looked for. Lieut. Appleby was in command of the Engineers, and Mr S. Manning was elected captain of the Civilian team.
The Artillery will fire a match against the Engineers in about two weeks’ time ; ten men each side. The conditions of this match will tent the judgment of all the competitors, as each man. after firing with his own weapon, will have to change with bis competitor, thus using strange weapons. This match is creating great interest, though the odds are in favor of the Artillerymen, who for the most part tire used to the Snid r rides, whilst the Engineers have no knowledge of the Artillery carbine. A match bet ween eight members oc (ho Kowai Rillo Club and the Engineers campan> ii also projected. All cnt.-ici for the forthcoming national wua uru-ii must be made ‘before the,*l2th
