SWIMMING RACES.
The first series of swimming races were inaugurated at the Corporation Baths on Saturday, when there was a good attendance of spectators. The 100 yards race, for the cup presented by M. S. Smith, brought three competitors to the scratch. The event, after a good contest, was won by W. Q-arrard, jun., by four yards, W. Garland and H. A. Mein coming in a dead heat. Mr M. S. Smith acted as starter and judge. Race for Boys under fourteen years, for medal. Instance 100 yards. First heat—J. MoGuiunoas, 1; D. Bruce, 2; J. Rhodes, 3. Second heat—J. Bowman, 1; W. Garland, 2; J, Mein, 3. Final heat—J. McGninncss, 1; W. Garland, 2 ; J. Rhodes. 3. Eleven started, hut four retired after swimming the length of the baths. This was a well-contested race, every boy doing his very best, A collection was made for the second and third boys, who got rewarded for their pluck and perseverance. Race for All Comers, for a sum of money. 1 0 yards. B, McCourt, 1; G Hutchinson, 2 ; W. Garland, 3. (Five started ) This was a splendid race, B. McCourt winning by one foot, W. Garland one yard behind Hutchinson.
