The French Ministerial statement to-day declared the country Republicans are actuated by pacific motives, promised, rigorous measures in order to make the Republican form of Government profitable. Hence the necessity for terminating existing commercial treaties without, however, departing from the principles of free trade. Changes of an antiRepublican nature would be avoided unless for doing away with anything detrimental to the interests of the country. The statement was coldly received. The Orient Line. The second New Guinea expedition is being got under way rapidly. About thirty (plications have been received. Destructive Fire at Kumara. Kumaka, January 18. A destructive fire broke out last night in the main street. The following houses were destroyed:—Eeefton hotel, Dungan and O’Brien’s hotel, and the Beehive store. Owing entirely to the exertions of the local brigade the fire was stayed, the whole street being in danger at one time.
