FOOT RACES AT DUNEDIN.

In the mile race, both Burke and Shopard started, but the latter pulled up almost immediately, apparently with the view of reserving himself for the five mile race. Burke, however, continued on gamely, and eventually won. When the two men came out for the long distance run Shepard wa'3 favorit-;., but after going three rounds, or something lefs than half a mile, he pulled up. The public did not fail to mark their sense of his conduct by expressions of disapprobation, loud and continued. Burke continued on his long journey alone, and completed the livo miles. The champion race of three distances, viz , 150, 220, and 410 y;vrds, was won bj M Donald ; White, second ; Goodfellow (AuHlraliar:), third. The two mile walking match for £SO, between J. Cotton and M. Carr, occasioned a go( d deal of interest. At the report of the pistol, Carr went away to the front, and led for fcw> laps by two or three yarde, but Cotton

then put on a spurt and passed his opponent. Both walked in good style and with perfect i'aiiT'Pßß, but Cotton had the advantage in eoncition, »nd gradually increasing his lead, won by eighty yards. Time for first mile—--Bmin. Sstc.; foi the two niles—l7min. 15sec.
