"MESSIAH."
To the Editor of the Globe. Sib, —After your very fair and j ust criticism of the rendering of the above grand oratorio, it must have surprised your numerous readers, as most assuredly it has astonished many of those who listened with pleasure to immortal Handel's "Messiah," that you should have admitted into your columns an anonymous letter such as that signed "One of the Audience," containing as it does such an un-called-for and unmanly attack on individual amateur performers, more especially when two of those whom he maligns are of tho gentler sex. Your correspondent ough'. to have signed his name, and we should iiava had an opportunity of affording him satisfaction, and refunding him the few shillings with interest of which he considers himself defrauded. We have heard the " Messiah" before. Your correspondent probably has no mind for anything so classical, and possibly such music as " Tommy make room for your uncle" may be more to his taßte. Y< U will with us, we are sure, Mr Editor, that lady amateurs who give their services should not be open to anonymous insult, and although we are strangers to all the performers, we challenge " One of the Audience" for his numo. We may inform him him chat if the Christchurch Harmonic was constituted as similar societies in New Zealand, he would have had difficulty in obtaining admission at all. John England Heavee, For four of the audience who are new chums in Christchurch, and lovers of fair play. 30lh December, 1878.
