The schooner Torea arrived from Wellington last s.s. Maori came into harbor from the West Coast ports and Wellington early this morning. She leaves for Timaru and Dunedin to day. The coasting steamers Tui and St. Kilda, cleared this morning, the former for Stonyhnrst and the St. Kilda for Wanganui. They both sail this aftern°Capt. McDonald, of the Kate McGregor, reports the Sunbeam and the Prince Alfred were to leave Kaipara lasi Saturday for here. The New Zealand Shipping Company were to despatch the Carmelo from London on the 7th Inst, for Lyttelton. The Union Steamship Company s Albion left Fort yesterday at half-past three o'clock for Wellington. She took nineteen passengers booked here, and 10 tons general cargo. _ . , n , . The Garibaldi left Nydia Bay on Saturday 21st, with light baffling winds to Gore’s Bay, thence fresh northerly to Cape Campbell, thence light variable winds and fine weather till arrival in harbour on Wednesday morning. The barque John Knox from Sydney arrived last evening. The Auckland built schooner Kate M’Gregor arrived from Kaipara yesterday at noon. She left December 19th, had westerly winds to the 21st, then light N.W. winds until sighting the Kuikoras on Tuesday last; from thence had light southerly airs until yesterday morning, when she had it hard from the north-east, the wind holding steady until she anchored in port. The brigantine Oceola came into port yesterday afternoon from Auckland with the strong nor’easter. She left there on the 19th inst., and brings railroad material for this port and Dnnedin. Among other reforms recommended by a committee of the Board of Trade recently, is a change iu the steering phraseology of the navy and mercantile service. They say distinctly that the confusion caused by crying "port" when the ship’s head is intended to go to starboard ought not to exist. Signalling by sound is also recommended. The committee had, among others on the list, Sir Frederick Arrow, Deputy Master of the Trinity House, and Mr T. H. Farrer and Mr Thomas Gri#, Of the Board of Trade. SHIPPING TELEGEAMS.
