BOARD OF HEALTH.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Local Board of Health was held at noon. Present —Messrs Hobbs (in the chair), Hall, Duncan, Harman, and Tancred. inspector’s retort. 1. I beg to report that tho side channels on the south side of the south town belt are in very unsatisfactory condition, for some weeks past the cleaning of the same having been neglected, thus causing the inhabitants of the locality to be justly apprehensive of danger to health. As I am informed that tho negotiation between the Sydenham Borough Council and the City Council is not progressing b.t fiafactorily, I would atk the Board, as a temporary measure to authorise me to employ labor for cleaning the channels in question. 2. I am giving my attention to the abatement of nuisances, arising chiefly from defective drainage, in that portion of the Heathcote district last inspected. Wji. Pearce, Chief Inspector of Nuisances. With regard to tho first clause, Mr Harman said it seemed to him that the city in this matter was shirking its duty. The Chairman said the city boundaries ought to bo extended a chain. It was resolved to send a letter to the City Council, asking them to abate the nuisance. The report was affirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was road from tho Colonial Secretary, acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the Board regarding tho death of a girl at Courtney. DISEASE. It was reported that since lust meeting there had been five cases of typhoid and one ot diptheria reported. accounts. Several accounts were passed, after which the Board adjourned.
