works can be supplied whenever the contractors fall in arrears; this will prevent delays from this cause. The works in Salisbury s reot havin'' been supplied with a quantity of bricks, arc now making better progress. The ground is sandy, and there is a very Urge quantity < f water to be pumped. It can be seen now that it would have been impossible to build the sewer in Mr Clark’s design without the storm-water sewer beside it, because nothing less than another sewer would take the underground water away. I submit a letter from Mr M‘Williams regarding the Heathcote river, and request the instructions of the Board. The lower part of the river is very foal, and requires immediate attention.

C. Nafier Bell, Er gineer. With regard to the first clause the Board approved of the action of the engineer, being of opinion that a pond of water wi s rather desirable than otherwise in the present dry slate of the weather. It was also resolved that no action should bo taken until further consideration.

The committee reported that they had found a shingle pit near Madras street Bridge where the necessary supply could be obtained. The action of the committee was confirmed.

The Engineer said the time of Mr McWilliams, contractor, was not quite up yet. The distance covered by hia contract extended over some six miles. The rivers were getting shallower and shallower every year through the spread of the roots. A letter was road from Mr McWilliams, stating that any future contract would have to be higher than the last. Mr Duncan thought the Board should not enter into any new contract at this late period of their existence. His own opinion was that the next contract should bo let for two or three’years. It was resolved to let the matter remain in abeyance until the next meeting of the Board.

The report as a whole was adopted. correspondence.

A letter was read from Messrs Connell and Douglas on behalf of Mr Thomas Anderson, stating that that gentleman would hold the Board responsible for any damage done to his property in Wilson’s road. A letter was read from Mr Thomas Kempthorno, bringing under the notice of tho Board the fact that men and boys were constantly in the habit of bathing near his place on the Sabbath and at other times. He thought bathers should ho compelled to wear drawers, and that boards should bo put up to that effect, and stating between what hours bathing might be allowed. The Chairman said tho Drainage Board had nothing to do with the bathing in tho river. They might drain it, but they could not drain the larrikins out of it. After some discussion it was resolved to reply to the letter to the effect that tho Board regretted that they had no power to take action in the matter.

A letter was read from the Church Property Trustees, describing the land which they proposed to sell to the Board for £IOO. The Engineer said it was only about the one-fiftieth part of an acre. The Board decided that the price was far too high, but that they were quite prepared to give the amount for tho piece of land between Barbadoes street and Cambridge Terrace, one chain in width, being a continuation of Salisbury street, and that unless their terms were accepted they preferred tho matter to go to arbitration. A motion to the above effect was moved by Mr Duncan and agreed to. A letter wns received from tho Heathcote Road Board, stating that only some £6 of rates were now outstanding. ranking account. Tho secretary was instructed to prepare a statement of tho banking account for the next Board meeting. Mr Hall said it was understood when their bankers were appointed, that at tho end of three years tho Board would have power to change their banking account. His own opinion was that better terms could be obtained if tenders were called for. It was resolved that tho matter should bo left over until the next meeting, and that the chairman should endeavor to make some arrangement for tho money at present lying at the bank. TENDERS. The Board then went into committee to consider tho tenders received for the supply of cement. On resuming, the Chairman reported that the tenders of Miles and Co,, Chrystal and Co, and C. W. Turner had been accepted. The engineer said that those tenders, with what they had, would complete the works. The Board then went into committee to consider the tenders for bricks. Only one tender was received, viz., that from Mr Neighbours, which was accordingly accepted. ACCOUNTS. Some accounts having been passed, the Board adjourned.
