BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SYDENHAM. The usual fortnightly meeting of this Council was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Crs. Brown, Foster, Charters, Hall, Pavitt, White, and Jones. The Mayor reported that in accordance with the resolution of the Council, he had on Sunday attended service in the Free Methodist Chapel, Addington, and that five of the councillors with the town clerk had also been present. Ho had received excuses from two of the other councillors. He took that opportunity to thank the Council, and might add that the collection had amounted to £2O Bs, and it would be for the Council to determine in what way the money should he disposed of. A letter was read from the Gas Company, stating that on and after the 23rd inst. they would open up the Lower Lincoln road for laying the mains. A letter was read from Mr Harris, the superintendent of the Christchurch Fire Brigade containing the thanks of that body to the Sydenham Council for their donation of ten guineas. A letter was read from the Crown Solicitor, recommending the Board to instruct their solicitor to consult with him rc the disputed road alongside the railway, Cr. Brown moved— 11 That Mr Duncan’s letters bo referred to a committee, to consist of the Mayor and the chairmen of the works and finance committees.” Seconded by Cr. Pavitt and agreed to, Or. Jones being the only dissentient. A letter was read from the Local Board of Health, calling the attention of the Council to the nuisance existing on the east side of Wilson’s road, and asking that the same might bo at once abated. The matter was referred to the works committee. A letter was read from the Commissioner of Bailways, stating the Minister of Public Works regretted that the Government could not at present comply with their request for a foot bridge across the railway line at Madras street. The letter was received. A letter was received from the Treasury, enclosing a vouchor for £IG7 13s, which sum had been paid into the Bank on account of the Sydenham Borough Council. A letter was read from the Biccarton Boad Board, calling attention to the bad condition of the south side of the Lincoln road, and asking that, it might be put into a proper state of repair for pedestrians. The letter was received. The report of the works committee was read. It stated that the concrete channelling had been commenced, and detailed what other works had been attended to. The report was adopted. The tender of Mr May, for works in the Lower Lincoln road, was accepted. Mr May waited on the Council, and said ho had omitted certain calculations in his tender, which ho therefore desired to withdraw, unless the Council would make him some allowance for the items he had omitted —say, £2O, Mr May then withdrew. Cr. Pavitt moved that the original tender bo adhered to. Seconded by Cr. Jones, and agreed to. Cr. Charters brought up the finance report, which showed a credit balance of £3055 10s Gd. The Town Clerk said the rates were now coming in very satisfactorily. Or. Charters observed that since they had threatened to issue summonses £SOO had been paid in. The outstanding rates were now only £450 Gs 3d. It was resolved not to proceed with the issuing of summonses at present. The report was then agreed to. Some discussion then took place on the subject of the by-law committee not bringing up by-laws. The Council wont into committee to consider the question. Ultimately the by-laws were referred to the by-law committee. Cr. Charters moved—" That the Mayor and the chairmen of the works, finance, and sanitary committee bo appointed a committee to draw up a report, to be presented to the Council as speedily as possible, re fire prevention.” Seconded by Cr. Jones and agreed to. Cr. Hall moved —“ That the lighting committee be instructed to call for tenders for the supply of twenty-five lamp posts and lamps.” Seconded by Cr. Charters and agreed to. After some business of an unimportant character had been transacted, the Council adjourned.
