ANNIVERSARY SPORTS.

The sports committee met yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs Ollivier (in the chair), Pratt, Bird, W alkden, Andrews, Mitchell, and Hebden. Tho Chairman said that he had brought under the notice of the Government the necessity of proclaiming Monday as a half holiday for the Banks. At present the Government had proclaimed Monday as a holiday, but having omitted mentioning tho Banks, the holiday would only apply to the Government, ofllccs. Tho Chairman said he thought that the visitors might be allowed to go on the ground without being called upon to subscribe, and a collection made during the proceedings. The opinion of the meeting was, however, in favor of tho arrangements as already fixed being carried out. The committee then proceeded to allot the stations of tho various gatekeepers during the day. Mr Walkden said that Mr Harris intended to put the electric light at the iron gate on tho Carlton road, so as to light visitors across the park to see the fireworks ; also, that he intended to have hire electric light going after after tho sports so as to light people homo. Mr Andrews reported the number of entries for the various races. A letter was read from (he Foresters’ fete committee, offering their services to tho committee in any way they might bo utilised on the occasion of the sports. The letter contained the names of several persons who had had experience in tho work of managing sports of this kind. It was resolved that tho thanks of the committee be conveyed to tho committee of the Foresters’ fete, and that Messrs Phipps, H. Crooks, and Williams bo requested to assist Mr Alport in carrying out the children’s races, Ac. Messrs Hebden aud Mitchell reported that they had purchased lollies and toys for the cnildren’s races. Air Walkden reported that tho grand stand was now in a proper condition, and that he hud had two men at work watering the course. After the transaction of some further business the meeting adjourned until the 20th instant
