CANTERBURY CRICKETING ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of 'the general committee of the Canterbury Cricketing Association was held at 8 o’clock last evening at the Commercial Hotel. There was a fair attendance, and the chair was occupied by Mr E. C. J. Stevens. A letter was read from Mr Eulton, of Dunedin, in reference to the mower which the Canterbury Association desire to purchase. The price was £37, but it was not yet unpacked, and he could not therefore report as to its character and condition. The secretary said he had received a letter from the secretary of the Otago Association, stating that they desire to play the annual match on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of February. After the present season the writer suggested that a conference should be held on the subject of the date of holding the forthcoming matches. He regretted that certain members of the Canterbury Association would not be able to go to Australia, but he hoped that, notwithstanding, the Canterbury men would be able to give good account of themselves. Mr A. M. Ollivier considered that the arrangement as to the time of playing the match had been fully gone into and decided by a former conference, consisting of two Canterbury and two Otago men. The Chairman stated what had taken place at the conference in question. Ho quite agreed that the Canterbury and Otago Associations were not bound by it, except that so far they had adopted it. They might, however, reconsider the matter. Mr Condell thought they ought to have some idea what the alterations were that wore required, and some reasons given. After some discussion, Mr Corfo moved — “ That the application of the Otago cricketers bo acceded to, and that the Canterbury Association have much pleasure in taking part in a conference.” Seconded by Mr Hartland, and agreed to. A letter was road from the Invercargill Club, asking tho Canterbury men if they could make arrangements to play a match with that club on their arrival from Australia. Mr Ashby said if they had known the steamer would have been so delayed they might have played the Invercargill match before going to Australia. Tho Chairman thought, tho Invercargill men might possible come and play at Christchurch. Mr Condell did not think there would bo any unnecessary delay, as the steamer they were going in would carry the English mail. After some discussion it was resolved that the secretary should write to tho Invercargill cricketers, and state that tho Canterbury men regretted that they would not bo able to play tho match proposed. Mr Ollivier said there had been a challenge from the Ashley County to play the Selwyn County. Tho Chairman za'id he had been in communication with tho Timaru cricketers, who after having partially arranged to play a match on tho 11th and 12th inst., had said the} could not do so on account of the Supreme Court meeting there about that time, lit had replied to that last communication, and the matter was therefore ir.dehnitely postponed. It was s’gggosted that if possible a match should come cl! at an early date bet ween tho Selwyn and Ashley, or even the Ashley und and Ashburton counties combined. The Chairman pointed ov.t the fact that all boroughs were out of the counties, and therefore it they excluded Christchurch they would have as much difficulty in getting an eleven together as the Ashley County. They might suggest to Mr Leech to select a team for a match with the association on Boxing Day. The secretary was instructed to trv and, make arrangements for a match with either one or more counties on Boxing Day against a Selwyn County team.
The question of the English cricketers was then mooted, and an opinion was expressed that the Canterbury team might, while in Australia, be able to make arrangement for the Englishmen to come to this province. This was all the business.
