The Government were defeated on the second reading of the Land Bill. The division was 41 to 22. The G-overnment supporters intend moving a vote of confidence. Further efforts at mediation between the directors of the company and seamen by representatives of the eight hours' conference, the iron trades, and the company's marine engineers, failed. The strike situation is unchanged. The Premier replied favorably to a deputation urging the necessity of action to restrict the Chinese influx. Sailed —Australi a. Melboubne, December 4. Arrived —Ringarooma on Wednesday. Sailed—Arawata on Thursday morning, at seven. NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS. [PEK PRESS AGENCY.] Auckland, December 5. A fire on the reclamation ground near the sawmill, to-day, destroyed a small factory, the property of Knight, asphalfcer. The fire was caused by the upsetting of boiling pitch. The damage is .£IOO. The schooner Caledonia, from Samoa, reports that a large crop of copra is expected. Wellington, December 5. The mail steamship City of Sydney, from Auckland on the 12th ult., with the November colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 3rd inst., two days in advance of due date. Tlie prayer of the petition against the use of the steam tramway has not been acceded to, but the Tramway Company will be required to adhere iu future strictly to the regulations, especially as regards speed. The Eoyal Commission, appointed to enquire into the condition of the settlement at Jackson's Bay, consists of Mr Bunny, M.U.E.; Dr. Giles, and Mr WMfcefoord, B.M. The Commission is to visit the settlement in the early part of January. Dune din, December 5. Mr W. P. Street is a probable candidate for High Ward in room of Mr Walter, elected Mayor. Mr Bathgate's motion re dissociation of Otago University from that of New Zealand, was discussed to-day. The following amendment by Dr. Stuart was carried :—" That this Council make application in the usual way for a Eoyal Charter, and that the Chancellor, Vice-chan-cellor, and Judge Bathgate be a committee to prepare the necessary papers for the approval of the Council " An amendment proposed by Mr Fulton, that it was impossible! to take the steps indicated by the Kev Stuart until the report of the Commission recently appointed should be received, was negatived.

Plaintiff's counsel oontend d tint Crocker bad knowingly e: joyed the proceeds of the orders, ami therefore was an accessory. Crocker admitted the indebtedness, but pleaded poverty, also that plaintiff had accepted the orders insti ad of cash, which the latter denied. .Major < 'rocker complained bitterly of tin aspersions made on his character. It was ordered to pay by 30th January, or a month's imprisonment. Father Hcnnebery lectured on temperance last night to 1000 people. At the dose they repeated the abstinence formula, and a procession of converts takes place next Sunday. Weljljl Mii'ON, December 5. Mr Blackett has reported on the tramways. He notes that they habitually run over ten miles an hour in wide streets, and lour in Manners str.n t, also that steam is allowed to escape, though the promoters held out aa a
special inducement that there would bo no smoke, iio recommend-" therefore not that the use of steam power be diallowed, but that it should be permitted only under the strict observance of the regulations (I), as to stipulated speed in all cases; (2), as to distance at which trains may follow each other; (3), as to suppression of the steam and smoke nuisance. A letter embracing the terms of the report has accordingly been sent by the Government to the Tramway Company.

The barque Southern Cross, which left Hobart Town for Lyttelton, on November 28th, has a shipment of twenty-two horses for Christchurch. They are BhippeJ by Messrs Cleland and Pitt, of Canterbury, and consisted of sixteen draught pedigree mare* aui six geldings, all of which were purchased i;i the north°rn districts. Several of the marcs were prize takers at the Campbell Town and Longford Show-*. The majority of the animals are the produce of Baron of Clyde and of inc.ilnshire Hero. The owners of the horses shipped are pastengers by the barque.
