On the 24th May last we (" Dunedin Herald") intimated to our readers that Mr John Darling, snperintending engineer, was about to proceed home to arrange for the building of a steamer to trade between Lyttelton and Wellington. This vessel is now in course of construction by Messrs Penny and Co., Dumbarton, but a material departure lias been made from the original intention. Instead of iron steel is to be used tor the hull, which will ensure greater strength, durability, and lisrhtau-ss—much desired points in a steam vessel. Anothor steamer of exactly the same dimensions as the one now being built will be laid down shortly for the same company. They will be fitted out in sik'li a luxurious manner, and command such a, high rate of speed that it may safely be asserted that nothing any way equal to them will be found in these waters. The dimensions are 2/011. keel, 35ft. beam. 26ft. depth of hold; engines, 300 h.p. nominal. Tenders have been called for a passenger launch, the dimensions of which wo have previously given, but nothing furthor has been done as yet. The engines are coming out trom the Clyde in the sbii. Canterbury, which will be due in about ten days time. The company also contemplate constructing a smart iron screw steamer ot the tollowing dimensions r-Length, 117 ft ; beam, 18ft ; hold 7ft 6in. Her lines will be sufficiently hue to admi't of'good speed, but at the same time she will Bt draw more than 6ft. 6in. to 7ft , with 120 tons cart'o and bunker coal. Accommodation tor twentyfive"' passengers, with a ladies' cabin making up eitrtat berths, will be found ia a house on deck. She will be fitted up with compound engines of oo h.p. nominal, and should therefore attain a good rate of sneed The engines will be placed amidships, between two masts, her rig being that of a schooner. Plans for this vessel have been drawn out, and tenders for her construction in the colony are likely to be called for shortly. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Auckland, November 14. The Hawea sailed South.
