Turner. chairman’s statement. The Acting Chairman made tho following statement: — Since our last meeting the following same have been paid into tho Board’s credit ; £ s. d. Wharfage for two weeks ending sth October, 1878 679 13 5 Warps and rent... ... 3 4 12 6 Pilotage and port charges ... 691 0 1 £1405 6 0 Acling under the authority of tho resolution passed at our last meeting, Mr Cunningham and myself opened tho tenders for the
Gladstone wharf extension, and the Screwpile and No. 1 intermediate jetties extension, and accepted the lowest tender in each case - namely, Messrs Hawkins and Co. s, £BBOI 15s lid for the former, and Messrs Langdown arid Co.'s, £6238 for the latter, I will ask the Board to confirm our action, and to order that their seal be afilxed to the respective contracts. With regard to the boiler tubes required for the dredge and barges, I have to report that, after unsuccessfully advertising for tenders here, as well as in Dunedin and Wellington, I acted upon the alternative embodied in the Board’s resolution, namely, of sending home for them. The order was forwarded to Messrs Bait and Lindsay, of Glasgow, by the last Suez mail. In further reference to the authority given by the Board to order from homo two pairs of spur and engine shaft wheels for the dredge, a report will be read from Mr Turpin, furnishing a list of additional dredge gear which is likely to be required within the next two years, and which it would be desirable should be obtained from the builders of the dredge. Tenders for castings for the dredge for six months will bo opened to-day. The dredging return for the month of October, is on the table. It will be noted that 169 barge loads of mud have been removed, amounting to 30,420 cubic yards, or 42,250 tons. This is a most satisfactory month’s work, when it is remembered that an accident happened to the new engine shaft wheel early in the month, causing some delay. The necessary instructions have been given to Mr Turpin in regard to dredging in front of the Gladstone Wharf extension, and the .ino up to which he is to dredge has been staked out. A letter will bo read from the New Zealand Shipping Co. in reference to the sailing of our steam tug from England. I think the time has now arrived when the Board should consider the question of the appointment of a master for her, as we may look forward to her arrival here by the end of this month or early in the next. I will ask the Board to confirm the temporary engagement of Mr Wm. Rich as inspector during the extension of the Gladstone Wharf ; his salary to be at the rate of £4 4s per week. Our engineer, Mr Bell, has reported that the employment of an inspector for this work is necessary. Mr Boyle has given up his tenancy of No. 2 shed on the Peacock’s Wharf property, and has leased No. 3 shed instead at a rent of 7s a week. A telegram from the Hon. Mr Richardson will be road in reference to the passing of pur Amendment Bill and the Harbor Boards Bill. I will ask Board’s instructions whether any communications should now be made to the National Bank with reference to the floating of the loan. The Secretary addressed a letter to Mr Whitby in terms of the Board’s resolution, and a reply has been received this morning, in which ho accepts the Board’s offer. An application has been received, and will be read from the Lyttelton Borough Council for a contribution of £IOO towards the Lyttelton Waterworks. It will be remembered that the Board granted a similar sum under a resolution dated the 23rd of November last year, for water supply and fire prevention purposes, CONTRACTS.
