Conferences between the Houses.
Wellington, October 29. The managers of the two Houses met at halfpast twelve to-day to confer on the amendments by the Council in the Electoral Bill.
All the managers were present. Mr Stout, on behalf of the Government, made a proposal, Ist, That the dual Maori vote should be in operation only until next election ; 2nd, That the Maori qualification should be on Crown grants only.
The managers of the Upper House rejected the compromise, and insisted on the excision of that part of clause 18 which proposed to confer the dual Maori vote.
The Conference adjourned without coming to any agreement and the result will be reported to the House at 2.30 to day. In reference to the Disqualification Bill, the managers appointed by the Upper House insisted on the disqualification of newspaper proprietors being members of the House, other than shareholders in Joint Stock Companies.
