[from the correspondent of the press.] miscellaneous. An earthquake at Montefalco, Italy, rendered 143 houses uninhabitable. The Prussian factories are busy making mitrailleuses after a new Swiss model, to order of the Eussian Government. According to the "Invalid Eusse, the Turks lost 150,000 men in the war, and ten million cartridges were fired by the Eussians, which makes one life in every sixty-six shots fired. The Empress of Austria visits Ireland, having leased Somerset House, Co. Meath, from Lord Lay ford. It is expected that the Marquis of Lome •will leave England shortly to succeed the Earl of Dufferin as Governor-General of Canada. Advices from the Cape to 13th August state that the British force, 5000 strong, was preparing to make a grand attack at Spitshofs, and that there was every prospect of a speedy termination of the war. Five persons had been murdered at Beaufort, and seven men, •including a son of the chief Kreli, had perished by fire in a hut. Fortifications for the defence of Table Bay were about to be commenced. The Countess of Dufferin has arrived in Liverpool on her way home from Canada. The Earl of Dufferin is spoken of for an important post in connection with our new protectorate of Asiatic Turkey, but whatever truth there may be in the rumour, nothing .definite as to the nature of the appointment has as yet transpired. A Circassian slave recently took refuge in the British consulate at Constantinople. The consul ordered her retention, and requested Minister Layard to urge the Porte to prohibit the sale of slaves in Turkey. With the exception of Leone, the whole or Western Bosnia is clear of insurgents. The Porte received a telegram from the Prince or Montenegro insisting upon the prompt surrender of all territory ceded to that country by the Treaty of Berlin. > It is reported that bands are organising in the Dobrudscha to re*ist Eoumanian occupation, and that they have plenty of arms and ammunition. Several German bishops are expected at Eome in October to report on the operation of the May laws. Some expelled bishops have been summoned to the Vatican to consult con- | cerning their future positions. These steps are connected with pending negotiations between the Vatican and Germany. A St. Petersburg telegram of September 28th says it is officially denied that Eussia had anything to do with the Ameer's rejection of the British mission. It is stated in official quarters that the conjectures of the English Press to that effect was merely the outcome of the antagonism, existing during the late war, when it was admitted that in consequence of reports that England was attempting to create difficulties in Bokhara and elsewhere, Eussia took various measures, contemplating several expeditions to reconnoitre neighboring territories, which, however, were countermanded at the first aign of Congress resulting in peace. _ _ The eruption of Mount Vesuvius 18 increasing. The base of the new cone is now covered with lava, which is streaming down the side of the mountain. It is said that the Pope has again written to the Emperor William, congratulating him upon his restoration to health, and wishing him a long and happy life. No mention is made in the letter of pending negotiations. A serious strike occurred on September 14th against a reduction of wages in the factories of coloured cotton. Three thousand looms ure idle. News from Ecuador states that Cotopaxi is again in a state of eruption, throwing out immense clouds of smoke and a&hes, which can be seen from Guayaquil. The eruption is the most viulent that has been known for some years. A H>ecinl from Pisa says that at the anniversary of the taking of Eome, two bombs were exploded before the barracks of the town of Trieste, and the walls were covered with insurrectionary placards. General Todlebeu telegraphs to the Czar that he was received at Adrianople by the Musselnwn, Greek, Bulgaria.., Armenian, and Jewish clergy, who requested him to express their gratitude for the protection the Eussian authorities afforded them. They stated that cuoh order and justice had never before pre-
vailed as during the occupation by Russian troops. Adrianople wns illuminated on the arrival and departure of General Todleben. The Italian Consul at Tangier telegraphed repeatedly that the situation there was intolerable. The British Consulate and Customs House wero attacked by a mob. Italy will probably send a man-of-war to" Tangier.
